Job Description


Imagine1day International Organization working under Ethiopia’s public education system and in partnership with the country’s federal, regional, and district government education offices, women’s, children’s, and youth offices, in particular, and other social services Providing government structures. We have been implementing programs that mainly focus on Education (TARL approach) in emergencies, leadership development, WASH activities in schools, community development, and emergency response programs in the Ethiopia region.

Accordingly, we are looking to fill the vacant position of zonal program coordinator in the Gedeo zone for the Teaching at Right Level (TaRL) project implementation with the regional education bureau and other partners in the South Ethiopia regional state.

We are looking for a senior, energetic program coordinator who will take on the leadership position of effectively and efficiently coordinating different education projects, particularly in the areas of boosting the literacy and numeracy of the children in the targeted zones.

 Job Overview:

The TaRL Program Coordinator will be responsible for providing strategic direction and vision to the Education programming and will be responsible for the overall quality of implementation.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the coordination and implementation of TaRL Project interventions in targeted woredas of the region in line with the Program Cooperation Agreement (PCA). She or he will coordinate the program at the zonal level and make sure that the program is implemented at the target woreda, kebeles, or site level in line with the agreement made through the PCA. She or he will be providing guidance and support for TaRL program staff for the implementation of the project. She or he will ensure periodic and timely reporting of response in target woredas in the target zone of the region.

This is a position that involves frequent contact with children and the community; therefore, imagine1day, as an organization working with children and vulnerable communities, has strict procedures for screening candidates against Education (TARL approach) and PSEA policies.

 Main responsibilities;

With guidance and support from the regional program manager and in collaboration with the zone/Woreda education office and schools as part of the overall response plan implementation, the program coordinator shall have the responsibility of:

1) Program planning, coordination, management, and leadership

  • In collaboration with the imagine1day regional program manager and county offices, she or he plays a role in creating a strong foundation for program coordination, including on-time development of the project implementation plan, including budget.
  • Provide technical and management leadership to the Education in the Education (TaRL approach) by best practices and i1d policies.
  • Actively participate in the project planning sessions organized by imagine1day regional program coordination offices.
  • In collaboration with the line zonal and Woreda Education, contribute to and provide input for developments, concept notes, and proposals for new programs and projects by identifying new emergency areas, community gaps, and emerging needs of the community through conducting desk reviews, need assessments, and presenting the findings.
  • Ensure that all planned Education (TARL approach) activities are implemented on time, within the budget, according to quality standards, and as per the monthly plan.
  • Provide situational updates and cluster updates for the regional offices. Coordinate the project visit and donor monitoring with the respective Zonal and Woreda Education offices and other education key stakeholders.
  • In partnership with Teachers’ Colleges, Universities, and others, organize training and capacity building on education for government and program staff.
  • Planning and executing the projects requires procurement in accordance with the financial policy of the organization and collaboration with the procurement and finance departments as well as the concerned program departments.
  • With support from the program managers, follow quarterly, monthly, and weekly activity plans to achieve expected results, and this includes planning activities and procurement.
  • Identify needs and gaps in programming and proactively suggest new activities to enhance the protection activities.
  • Supervise (in collaboration with the EiE Specialists) the required evaluations of new situations or of the existing programs to guarantee high-quality interventions.
  • Supervise to conduct regular monitoring and evaluation activities and, regularly, liaise with partners to identify gaps and challenges as well as to ensure the quality impact of the approach.
  • Work closely with the M&E officer to ensure data is collected to better report on activities and ensure quality services for beneficiaries.
  • Prepare quality weekly and monthly reports in addition to other reporting tasks as per donor and partner requirements.
  • Ensure continued coaching and mentoring for the project coordinators, officers, and other actors based on the project’s needs.
  • Provide technical support to program staff and partners such as the Education office on (the TARL approach) and education response plan. This includes ensuring that the efforts are aligned with existing government mechanisms and services to strengthen their sustainability.
  • On-going capacity building for teachers, and school principals on Education (TARL approach) systems, community mobilization, integration of Education (TARL approach) into other programs (multi-sector programming), and psychosocial support in line with capacity building plans Monitor and report on the results of capacity-building efforts.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting requirements from woreda and kebeles/sites are met (as per the established format) and systematic coordination of appropriate responses on Education (TARL approach) in the operational response plan with other relevant sectors, especially education.
  • Facilitate and support Donors’ field visits to target woreda and kebeles/sites.
  • Support and coordinate other projects in the target area
  • Undertake other relevant tasks as directed by her or his supervisor and assist with other duties in support of the Education (TARL approach) in the Program.

2. Program Finance and Administration

  • Ensure the financial, human, and asset aspects of the program are planned, implemented, controlled, monitored, and reported in accordance with the HR, finance, and administration policies and guidelines of the organization.
  • Participate in the selection, training, development, and performance of staff that will report to the zonal program coordination offices.

3. Program monitoring, evaluation, and documentation-develop

  • Develop project monitoring and evaluation. Plans and coordinates the project’s monitoring, evaluation, learning, and documentation with program staff and partners.
  • Identify program gaps and propose solutions for challenges in communication with the regional program manager and technical staff.
  • In partnership with signatory offices Coordinate the program field visit, monitoring, and evaluation by the donors.
  • Develop quality program or project reports and communicate them to internal and external stockholders, donors, clusters, and regional staff by the project proposal or agreements and standard reporting formats. These include monthly, quarterly, biannual, final, 5W, and other program updates.
  • Systematically coordinate the documentation of project inputs, outputs, results, and impacts of the program or projects.
  • In collaboration with the communication departments, coordinate the development and communication case histories, lessons learned, and best experiences.

4. Building Partnerships

  • Create strong partnerships with government partners, NGOs, and the community by creating strong channels of communication and maintaining relationships by the organizational vision and values.
  • Systematically exchanging and communicating Imagine 1 Day’s vision, mission, and value with partners and communities in the respective zones, woreda, and communities

About You

  • University degree or master’s at an advanced level in the fields of educational planning and management, educational leadership, educational psychology, sociology, social work, psychology, social anthropology, community development, development studies, and related fields.
  • Extensive work experience relevant to Education (TARL approach) in both development and emergencies may be considered a replacement for formal qualifications at an advanced level.
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible humanitarian and development work experience in education, Education (TARL approach), and projects and program coordination, including in emergencies,
  • Previous experience of at least three years in Education program coordination in an international or national NGO or UN agency
  • Familiarity and experience working with government counterparts.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in establishing Education coordination architecture
  • Who is well trained in school leadership, education, and Education (TARL approach) minimum standards and result-based project cycle management.
  • Qualitative and quantitative report writing, communication, and presentation skills
  • Strong skill and passion for supporting and supervising education program offices and field staff, creating a strong team with a transformational leadership mindset.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and the Internet.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English, the local language, and Amharic.
  • Having experience working with the Education Bureau and within SNNP regional states, zonal, and woreda levels will be an asset.
