Job Description


The Bahir Dar Specialty Eye Center (BDSEC), an initiative of Cure Blindness Project, has finalized its office set-up and is expected to become a leading institution in the fight against avoidable blindness in East Africa. For over 25 years, the initiative has been at the forefront of global efforts to eradicate avoidable blindness by developing high quality, cost-effective eye care systems in underserved regions. It has facilitated over 1.4 million sight-restoring surgeries and screened more than 14.5 million people, providing essential care and treatments to those in need.

In addition to these surgical achievements, the initiative has trained over 19,500 eye health professionals and established five eye hospitals around the world. As part of its continued commitment to improving global eye health, BDSEC is proud to introduce a state-of-the-art facility in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

BDSEC will offer advanced cataract surgeries and a wide range of specialized eye examinations and surgical procedures.

BDSEC is seeking to recruit a team of highly skilled health professionals who will play a crucial role in the Center’s mission to restore sight and improve the quality of life for countless individuals in the region. We invite qualified candidates to apply for the following key positions

Description 

We are looking for a highly skilled and dedicated Vitreoretinal Surgeon to join our esteemed medical team. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in diagnosing and surgically treating disorders of the retina and vitreous. This role requires a deep understanding of complex ocular conditions and the ability to perform intricate surgical procedures with precision. The Vitreoretinal Surgeon will work closely with other ophthalmologists, optometrists, and healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to patients. Responsibilities include conducting thorough patient evaluations, developing individualized treatment plans, and performing advanced surgical techniques to address retinal detachments, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, and other vitreoretinal diseases. The potential candidate should demonstrate exceptional surgical skills, a commitment to patient centered care, and the ability to stay current with the latest advancements in vitreoretinal surgery. Additionally, the Vitreoretinal Surgeon will be involved in educating patients about their conditions, potential treatment options, and postoperative care. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, a compassionate approach to patient care, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative medical environment. About You

Duties and responsibilities: 

  • Performs comprehensive eye examinations to diagnose retinal disorders.
  • Utilizes advanced diagnostic tools such as OCT, fluorescein angiography, and fundus photography.
  • Develop and implement personalized treatment plans for patients with retinal           diseases.
  • Performs retinal surgeries, including vitrectomy ,laser procedures and intravitreal injections.
  • Performs excellent small incision and phacoemulsification surgeries.
  • Collaborates with other ophthalmologists, optometrists, and healthcare professionals.
  • Stays updated with the latest advancements in retinal treatments and technologies.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed patient records in EMR system according to established standards.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families about diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis.
  • Manages and treat emergency retinal conditions such as retinal detachment.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional development activities.
  • Ensures compliance with medical regulations and standards.
  • Provides second opinions and consultations for complex cases.
  • Performs Ward rounds for inpatient and operated patients.
  • Handles legal documentation for the certification of patients as blind or partially sighted.
  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance.
  • Must be able to work at alternative BDSEC locations as needed
  • Displays a positive attitude and is a positive agent for change.
  • Work as part of a team and collaborate with co-workers.
  • Should be able to work under pressure and complete assigned tasks under stressful situations.

Qualifications & skills: 

  • Medical Doctor with Ophthalmology specialization and 7 years or more work experience in ophthalmology
  • Three years’ work experience in retina subspecialty field.
  • Excellent cataract surgeries performance.
  • Tested surgical &practical skills.
  • Ability to achieve team goals while demonstrating organizational values and utilizing resources responsibly.
  • Ability to be proactive and take initiative.
  • Possession of strong organizational skills.

Preferred Experience: 

  • International training with work Experience in abroad.
  • Full time employee with no interest to work as consultant anywhere else
