Job Description


All God’s Children International’s (AGCI’s) Reunification Homes provide a safe and nurturing environment for children transitioning back to family or community care. As a Tutor Teacher, you will play a key role in fostering resilience, confidence, and learning through trauma-informed teaching practices, facilitating lessons and support through a balance of structure and nurture. The Tutor Teacher’s primary responsibility is to support student development through structured, systematic lessons while addressing individual needs. They will prepare structured lessons, assess student progress, and recommend appropriate learning materials to enhance understanding. The role also involves motivating and encouraging students, setting clear lesson goals, and delivering instruction in an organized and engaging manner. Candidates must have prior teaching and tutoring experience specifically in an environment with children.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Develop students through systematic lessons to impart knowledge.
  • Develop tailored, age-appropriate lesson plans designed to engage and support students from diverse backgrounds
  • Address areas for improvement and provide necessary feedback during tutorials.
  • Understand the specific needs of each student and address them accordingly.
  • Conduct assessments to gauge student progress.
  • Make recommendations for additional learning materials.
  • Encourage students through positive reinforcement and motivation.
  • Teach subjects in a structured and systematic manner, monitoring student reactions.
  • Set lesson goals for students.
  • Determine the time required to complete each subject or course.
  • Work closely with child caregivers to understand student backgrounds, strengths, and challenges.
  • Share insights and progress updates to ensure a holistic approach to student development.
  • Collaborate on strategies to support academic and emotional needs.
  • Utilizes AGCI case management software, collecting and assessing data, reporting on child progress, and analyzing outcomes
  • Prepare and maintain case records, reports, relevant correspondence, and databases, communicates decisions, timelines, recommendations and case plans to clients regarding educational progress
  • Participate in training and other staff development activities to increase knowledge of trauma-informed competence
  • Conduct timely data entry in AGCI’s case management system for all activities facilitated in HOH or any field activities
  • Work collaboratively with care team on progress updates and goal setting for each child
  • Protect children from physical and psychological injuries; ensure the safety of the child in compliance with AGCI’s Child Protection Policies
  • Incorporate trauma-informed care practices and strategies in all activities
  • Become knowledgeable in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) skills and practices and utilize intervention methods daily with children
  • Be prepared to respond to emotional or psychological crises, providing immediate support and referring cases to specialized staff as needed
  • Maintain client confidentiality, perform all duties in conformance with AGCI Child Protection Policy
  • Develop success stories of children educational progress to assist in the fundraising and marketing efforts of AGCI
  • Perform other tasks within the scope of his/her work, assigned by the Senior Social Worker

General Administration: 

  • Maintains positive relationships with local administration offices, communities, and beneficiaries
  • Attends and represent the organization in different meetings organized by AGCI or stakeholders, as directed
  • Ensure the protection of all children and families served by AGCI’s programs
  • Work with AGCI Headquarters to highlight the impact of AGCI’s HOH program in Ethiopia with individual sponsors, donors, and foundations, as requested
  • Maintain high standard of services to beneficiaries, partners, and external guests
  • Maintain punctual, regular, and predictable attendance; can work evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and training courses as required
  • Other duties, as assigned

Working Conditions:

  • The role requires working flexible hours, including weekends, and holidays, as necessary to meet the needs of the reunification home.
  • Ability to handle physically and emotionally challenging situations, including lifting, bending, and providing direct care to children as needed.

About You

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Education or Teaching and experience in tutoring various age groups and identifying student needs.
  • Further training in childcare and development such as trauma-competent caregiving and/or trauma-informed care, early childhood classes and /or in service training,
  • Proven teaching experience with professional references

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in education or social services, with at least 2 years in NGO setting.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed care and child development – knowledge of TBRI practices and principles preferred
  • Proficiency in documentation and record-keeping
  • Commitment to child safeguarding and protection policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stress effectively in a demanding caregiving environment
  • Strong command of the language and proficiency in at least four subjects.
  • Computer skills for using presentation software preferred
  • Organizational and planning skills for structured lessons.
  • Conflict resolution abilities without intimidation.
  • Dedication to student growth and commitment to the job.
  • Calm demeanor and ability to create a safe learning environment.
  • Confidence in delivering lessons and enthusiasm to inspire students’ interest.
  • Creativity to engage diverse student needs and patience for individual learning paces.
  • Evaluative skills to assess student progress.
  • Professionalism with a focus on care and student support
