Job Description


The Save the Children Fund, commonly known as Save the Children, was established in the United Kingdom in 1919 to improve the lives of children through better education, health care, and economic opportunities, as well as providing emergency aid in natural disasters, war, and other conflicts. After passing a century, which it celebrated in 2019, it is now a global movement made up of 29 national member organizations which work in 120 countries.

Role Purpose

The position holder is responsible for therapeutic feeding program implementation in the woreda and working closely with woreda, kebele, community and religious leaders, health worker, health extension worker and community health volunteers for the effective implementation and linkage of CMAM program with community and facility. In addition the position holder is also expected to provide a consistent and high quality technical support in relation to CMAM component implementation and will assist OTP/SC nurse and other team in the woreda to build strong OTP AND SC implementation package. He/she will also oversee overall health and nutrition implementation in the assigned woreda.

SCOPE OF ROLE

Reports to:  Health, Nutrition and WASH Program Coordinator.

Dimensions: Save the Children works in Ethiopia with a current staff complement of approximately 1300 staff and current expenditure of approximately $100+ million each year.

Staff directly reporting to this post:  None.

In line with SCI’s dual mandate, these key areas of accountability apply to Save the Children in Ethiopia’s work in emergencies (acute and chronic) and in development settings.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Adherence to medical and nutritional treatment protocols and procedures for children in primary health care facilities.
  • Strengthen the coordination at woreda level.
  • Ensure all criteria are respected and understood by the health workers and health extension workers including admission, discharge and transfer to and from the SFP.
  • Participate in capacity building trainings, health education sessions and SBCC
  • Ensure the availability of Job aid, reporting formats, therapeutic products and drugs for program implementation.
  • Facilitate and ensure referral system and linkage between services and health facilities.
  • Support and liaise with health centres staffs and provide on job training and capacity building where required for health worker and health extension workers.
  • Create and maintain relationship with local health and other authorities and link CMAM programs with the existing health structure smoothly.
  • Collaborate with local authorities and partner to harmonize different efforts for better impact and sustainability.
  • Provides technical support and trainings where required to all team members, outreach team including health extension workers and community volunteers.
  • Collaborate with the Woreda and Emergency Nutrition Response project staffs at the health centers & HPs for the day-to-day implementation of the OTP/SFP/SC services by developing new measures and/or maintain existing measures as directed.
  • Works closely with Health workers, health extension workers and community volunteer to promote health and nutrition services to inaccessible sites and kebeles.
  • Keep update with development in the provision of essential health nutrition services including application and scale up of best practice through and ensure ongoing personal development and learning.
  • Responsible for effective logistics management.
  • Represents save the children in woreda level.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly reports and submit to line managers.
  • Organize woreda level review meeting and learning meetings as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties assigned by line manager.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BSC/Diploma in Nursing or Public Health officer or above.
  • Minimum four years working experience for BSC and Six years’ experience for Diploma holders out of which two years’ experience directly related to emergency health and nutrition related fields.

Skills/Ability required

  • Demonstrated skills in program planning implementation and monitoring.
  • Knowledge, training and experience in CMAM activities.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and local language (Afan Oromo).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Effective in time management and setting priorities, supervisory and managerial skills.
  • Willingness and ability to dramatically change work practices, flexibility in working long hours and ability to work with incoming surge teams.
  • Ability to work in team setting, friendliness and resourcefulness.
