Job Description


Under the general supervision of the MSIE Centre Coordinator, Centre Head, Centre Manager, or IPD Head, the OR/Scrub Nurse at the MCH Specialty Center is responsible for providing essential perioperative nursing care and support during surgical procedures. This role involves preparing the operating room, ensuring the sterility of instruments and environments, and assisting the surgical team in various capacities to ensure the smooth and efficient execution of surgeries in accordance with accepted standard medical practice and professional codes of conduct.

DUTIES/TASKS

General

  • Provides nursing services, within defined scope of practice, to patients based on patient assessment and care planning procedures
  • Performs nursing interventions such as taking vital signs, applying aseptic techniques including sterile dressing, ensuring infection control, monitoring nutritional intake and conducting specimen collection
  • Administers medication and observes and documents therapeutic effects
  • Provides pre-operative and post-operative personal and comfort care
  • Monitors patients’ progress, evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions and consults with appropriate members of healthcare team
  • Provides reproductive health/family planning education to individuals and their families.

Pre-Operative Preparation:

  • Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
  • Verify the sterility of instruments and equipment and ensure the operating room is following aseptic standards.
  • Assist in the positioning of patients on the operating table and provide necessary support to ensure patient comfort and safety.

Intra-Operative Duties:

  • Assist the surgical team by passing instruments, sponges, and sutures during operations.
  • Maintain the sterility of the surgical field by adhering to strict aseptic techniques.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide necessary instruments and materials promptly.
  • Monitor and account for all surgical instruments and supplies throughout the procedure to prevent any retained items.

Post-Operative Care:

  • Assist in the transfer of patients from the operating room to the recovery room.
  • Ensure proper disposal of surgical waste and decontamination of the operating room.
  • Restock and prepare the operating room for the next procedure.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthetists, and other members of the surgical team to ensure smooth operations.
  • Report any concerns or irregularities during the surgery to the surgeon or operating room supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of surgical procedures, including counts of instruments and supplies.
  • Be prepared to assist in emergency situations by providing rapid and effective responses to critical events.
  • Ensure the availability and readiness of emergency equipment and supplies.

Patient Safety and Advocacy:

  • Ensure patient safety by adhering to all operating room protocols and guidelines.
  • Advocate for patient needs and concerns throughout the surgical process.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to ethical and legal standards in all aspects of care. 

Related Duties/Tasks

  • Ensures the maintenance of high-level standards and applies universal precautions to prevent infection (e.g. HIV/AIDS) from blood or other body fluids of patients
  • Accounts for all assets under his/her custody during regular stock taking and audit as and when required.
  • Prepares and submits periodic reports as required.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies; accounts for all assets under his/her custody during regular stock taking and audit as and when required.

  • Make an on-time report for the clinical incident happened in the center as per the guideline of MSIE.
  • Performs related tasks as required

Qualification Requirements

Education:

                   BSc in Nursing/ Operation Theater Specialty Nursing

Experience

Two Years’ relevant experience

Skills, Attitudes, and Attributes:

  • Good Communication and Interpersonal skills
  • Conscious of Government, MSI and MSIE regulations
  • Proficient in perioperative nursing techniques and practices.
  • High level of accuracy in maintaining sterile environments and performing surgical counts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and handle the physical demands of the operating room environment.
