Job Description


The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

The Position:

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate III – Chicken Husbandry and Feeding System position to assist in chicken breeding experiments and coordinate the design and implementation of school feeding and evaluation of nutrition intervention components of the Tropical Poultry Genetic Solutions (TPGS) projects in ILRI, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Serve as a generalist to collect data, manage, and clean for analysis, help in the implementation of school feeding programs, collect and manage data form the chicken breed improvement programs, collect and manage data in the value chain activities with the support of the TPGS team based in Addis Ababa;
  • Work with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the capacity to manage commodities and school feeding activities at all levels of implementation;
  • Provide technical assistance and trainings to support school feeding and chicken breeding programs;
  • Implement data collection and assist in research analysis of school feeding and chicken breeding;
  • Provide support to the ongoing chicken breed improvement programs at ILRI campus and out;
  • Facilitate participatory research, including assessments and community engagement, for livestock and food safety-related interventions;
  • Contribute to the writing of scientific publications as well as outputs for a wider audience.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • BSc degree in Animal Sciences or Food Science and Nutrition or related fields
  • Knowledge in relevant field and relevant technical training

Experience:

  • Five years of relevant experience with a background in urban agriculture or poultry production or related fields

Skills:

  • Understanding and application of practical methods, work procedures and methods
  • Familiarity with the livestock system issues and challenges in Ethiopian households
  • Prior experience implementing feeding programs and collection of survey data
  • Computer Skills, including experience with nutrition software packages (WHO Anthro plus, Nutrisurvey).
  • Understanding of poultry husbandry, poultry breeding and genetics
  • Good analytical skills – either qualitative or quantitative
  • Capacity to work independently
  • Very good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience in data collection (quantitative data and qualitative data, conduct focus group discussion, key informant interview, and biological samples in a different region.
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken
  • Willingness to travel frequently, often to rural areas, and spend time in the field

Duty Station:     Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Grade:  HG 12

Minimum Monthly Base Salary:  Birr 26,649 (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)
