Summary

Abt Associates seeks six (6) Regional Directors for the Ethiopia FAST project, to be based in the following regional offices: (1) Dessie or Woidia or Mekele; (2) Bahir Dar; (3) Jimma; (4) Addis Ababa; (5) Dire Dawa; and (6) Hawassa. The Regional Director is responsible for overseeing the implementation of regional project activities, management of project staff, liaising and collaborating with USAID offices (regional and country) and other USG representatives, managing the regional office budget, and coordinating with partner organizations. S/he will supervise and work together with specialists in nutrition and livelihoods, livestock production and marketing, private sector engagement, community outreach, and administrative personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • The Regional Director will lead all program activities within their region and will develop partnerships with key private sector players and institutions to improve agriculture and nutrition outcomes within their region.
  • S/he will establish and maintain systems for project operations and coordinate and maintain working relationships with key project stakeholders (including USAID, other USG representatives, host country ministries, high-level government officials, and private sector partners).
  • The Hawassa and Dire Dawa Regional Offices will work on improving nutrition status of pre-dominantly pastoral areas, and the Regional Directors in the two sites must know and have experience in the respective sites.
  • The Regional Director will report to the Chief of Party and will closely coordinate with the US-based project team. The Regional Director is required to be fluent in one or more of the official languages in the respective ZOI.

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in international development, agribusiness, finance, economics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience managing complex private sector agricultural development programs in a developing country, preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa including Ethiopia.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in a supervisory role with projects of similar complexity.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to engage productively with a wide range of organizations, beneficiaries, and related parties (e.g. producers, government, private sector, NGOs, research and training institutions).
  • Demonstrated commitment to addressing inclusivity objectives in agriculture and trade.
  • Understanding of and/or skills in CLA and/or using adaptive management techniques is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are required; oral and written fluency in Amharic or another Ethiopian language desirable.
