Job Description


PETCO Ethiopia Recycling Community Organization (PETCO Ethiopia) is a non-for-profit organization incorporated in 2019 to represent the Ethiopian PET plastic industry’s joint effort to self-regulate post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling. PETCO Ethiopia seeks to minimize the environmental impact of post-consumer PET on the Ethiopian landscape through growing the collection & recycling of PET bottles after consumer use; supporting existing & encourage new collection and recycling initiatives; and promoting a strong focus on public & consumer education & awareness programs. PETCO Ethiopia operates throughout Ethiopia and has its head office in Addis Ababa.

PETCO Ethiopia in partnership with Hawassa City EPA and financial support of UNDP-gef is implementing a project entitled “Solid Waste collection and youth Economic Empowerment in Hawassa city”. Thus, the overall objective of this project is mitigation of the negative consequence of the post consumed plastic waste on Hawassa Lake. Our target communities are unemployed youth. The major intervention of the project will be provision of skill training on plastic waste management and compost preparation, provision of inputs, facilitating the collection sites, creating market link for the recycled products, and documentation of best practices for knowledge management.

The employee will be responsible to implement activities of this project under the supervision of program coordinator. PETCO Ethiopia seeks to hire a professional under the following capacity:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinate and lead project activities by providing technical support to Solid Waste collection center in Hawassa City:

  • Plastic waste supply chain management facilitation – manufacturing segregation, collection, transportation, aggregation, and recycling
    Plans, develops, coordinates, implements, and promotes recycling and waste management programs and activities.
  • Develops specifications and requests for proposals or qualifications for consulting and contract services.
  • Conduct day to day supervisions and monitoring visit of Waste collection center that ate supported by the project.
  • Compiles data for statistical tabulation and analysis; submits comprehensive reports to relevant stakeholders.
  • Liaison with Hawassa City EPA for reporting, and joint supervision.
    Generate continuous data on PET collected and sorted by target Waste collection association from the Hawassa Lake as well as socioeconomic data of beneficiaries.
  • Prepare project documents like TORs, project reports, etc. and presentation to various stakeholders.
  • Lead capacity building training, mentor and provide backstopping service to targe beneficiaries.
  • Liaison and Network with various stake holders, both government and nongovernment, during the execution of the projects in Hawassa City.
  • Managing community recycling initiatives
  • Support community-based recycling centers, companies, schools, and community organizations
  • Preparing reports, plans, publicity materials and displays.
  • Responsible for planning, monitoring, and reporting as well as
  • Knowledge management of the recycling project.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned from time to time by the senior management.

Job Requirements

COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Waste Management, Environment, Geography and Environmental Studies, NRM, Social Sciences, or relevant field
  • Demonstrate experience and passion in the areas of solid waste management, community development, if possible, reference to plastic recycling etc.
  • Promotes the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the organization.
  • Good communications and organizational & interpersonal skills.
  • Builds professional networks with institutional partners.
  • Sought for advice by peers, subordinates, leaders.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and requirements and multitask as needed.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Excellent knowledge of written Amharic and spoken English are essential.
  • Demonstrates integrity and ethical standards.
