Job Description


PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Project Director will lead the development and implementation of a three year consortium project supporting safer surgery in Ethiopia. The role includes the management and coordination of all consortium activities, including those delivered by consortium partners (national professional associations and international NGOs), and representation to and coordination with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH).

This position requires significant coordination and leadership skills, broad general and technical knowledge, experience in global health system strengthening, and skills to ensure coherence and consistency in delivering a high quality, high impact program of work.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Project Director will have ultimate responsibility for the programmatic delivery and integrity of the project, ensuring timely and effective implementation, meeting key milestones, liaising and communicating with collaborative partners and key stakeholders, and overseeing all monitoring, evaluation and compliance-related activities. They will be expected to identify issues and risks related to program implementation in a timely manner, and suggest appropriate program adjustments. This individual shall act as the key liaison between the funder and all other counterparts and implementing partners involved with the program, including the FMoH.

Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Leading a phase of program development, ensuring the program is designed for optimum impact, integrated with FMoH priorities and strategy, with a robust measurement system and appropriate governance structures in place;
  • Providing high level strategic vision, overall leadership, technical direction, and management oversight for all program activities and results
  • Applying in-depth technical expertise to the program, ensuring an integrated vision among various components and partners, and focusing on achieving results;
  • Ensuring proper, timely and quality implementation of the project, including ensuring that activities are conducted on time and on budget and that regular budget reviews are undertaken in collaboration with Lifebox’s global finance team;
  • Working closely with Lifebox’s global finance team to ensure that the project is implemented according to the donor’s policies and principles and that there are no disallowable expenses;
  • Ensuring that any direct line reports have up to date job descriptions, roles and responsibilities and receive performance evaluations at least once a year.

Job Requirements

Essential

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to cultivate and maintain internal and external relationships with stakeholders, partners, and staff;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to contribute to, review, edit and draft project reports and technical deliverables, and represent the organisation and partners;
  • At least seven years’ senior management experience;
  • Significant experience of leading collaborative and/or consortium;
  • Experience working with key donors and partners, such as UN agencies, international foundations and multilaterals;
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of global surgery;
  • More than 7years 5xperience of designing and implementing projects in the context of global health, and proven ability to manage projects to a high standard;
  • Understanding of project management principles and tools;
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritise multiple work streams, and to work independently and proactively;
  • Financial management skills, including budgeting and budget management;
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Amharic language skills

Desirable

  • Postgraduate degree in public health or related medical field
  • Clinical experience
  • Project management qualification
