Job Description


ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

Summary

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Scientist to support research on understanding health risks from urban markets and designing interventions to upgrade informal markets.

This post doctoral position will support the initiative’s work on understanding health risks from urban markets and designing interventions to upgrade informal markets. It is expected the post doctoral scientist will engage in data analysis and interpretation to provide information to support the design of future intervention programs for improved human health, as well as support the design of epidemiological studies in a range of countries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Play a lead role in research in the Resilient Cities through Sustainable Urban and Peri-urban Agri-food Systems project under the supervision of the PI. Activities include:
    • Design and implementation of field surveys to be conducted in Ethiopia and in other countries
    • Data analysis and interpretation
    • Supervision and coordination of field teams involved in projects under the resilient cities initiative
    • Write up of research outputs (including scientific reports, peer-reviewed publications, briefs)
    • Supervision of junior staff, including research assistants and research fellows
  • Support capacity building of junior researchers and fellows
  • Contribute to other food safety, food systems and One Health projects as needed

Requirements

  • PhD in agriculture, veterinary medicine, nutrition, public health, epidemiology, or relevant discipline
  • Two to four years of completing PhD
  • Data management
  • Experience in writing reports and research publications
  • Data analysis using a range of statistical software (e.g. STATA, R)
  • Experience working in low- and middle-income countries
  • Evidence of strong quantitative analytical skills
  • Solid track record of publication of scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. Evidence of publication of other type of research outputs would be an advantage (e.g. reports, blogs, op-eds)
  • Excellent command of English. Knowledge of another language would be an advantage
