Job Description


The Bahir Dar Specialty Eye Center (BDSEC), an initiative of Cure Blindness Project, has finalized its office set-up and is expected to become a leading institution in the fight against avoidable blindness in East Africa. For over 25 years, the initiative has been at the forefront of global efforts to eradicate avoidable blindness by developing high quality, cost-effective eye care systems in underserved regions. It has facilitated over 1.4 million sight-restoring surgeries and screened more than 14.5 million people, providing essential care and treatments to those in need.

In addition to these surgical achievements, the initiative has trained over 19,500 eye health professionals and established five eye hospitals around the world. As part of its continued commitment to improving global eye health, BDSEC is proud to introduce a state-of-the-art facility in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

BDSEC will offer advanced cataract surgeries and a wide range of specialized eye examinations and surgical procedures.

BDSEC is seeking to recruit a team of highly skilled health professionals who will play a crucial role in the Center’s mission to restore sight and improve the quality of life for countless individuals in the region. We invite qualified candidates to apply for the following key positions

Position Summary:

Pharmacists dispense prescription drugs to patients.  They provide information about the drugs and help patients understand the instructions their doctors or other health practitioners provided.  Pharmacists play a vital role in the health care system through the medicine and information they provide.

About You

Duties and responsibilities: 

  • Dispenses prescription drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners.
  • Provides information to patients on drug interactions, side effects, dosage and storage of pharmaceuticals.
  • Compounds medications, using standard formulas and processes, such as weighing, measuring and mixing ingredients
  • Answers patients’ questions on the use of prescription.
  • Provides information to patients on drug interactions, side effects, dosage and storage of pharmaceuticals.
  • Ensures the accuracy of prescriptions filled and making sure drugs don’t interact in a harmful way.
  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and disposal of hazardous waste drugs
  • Inputs and reviews patients’ data (patient name, date of birth, prescribed medications, cost, insurance information, etc.) into provided computer system to maintain pharmacy files, charge system and inventory.
  • Supervises and checks the work of Pharmacy technicians and other less experienced staff.
  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting.
  • Participates and takes patients’ drug histories and contributes to the treatment decision making process (this includes highlighting a drug’s potential side effects, identifying harmful interactions with other drugs and assessing the suitability of treatment for patients with health conditions)
  • Monitors every stage of medication therapy to improve all aspects of delivery and reports patient side-effects
  • Prepares and quality-checks sterile medications under special conditions (intravenous medications for those unable to take food, anti-cancer medications, etc.)
  • Liaises with physicians, nurses and other health care professionals to ensure the delivery of safe, effective and economic drug treatment
  • Counsels patients on the use of drugs and on their use at home when the patients are discharged
  • Verifies patient information by interviewing patient and accurately records all information in EMR system according to established standards.
  • Attend weekly team meetings and be prepared to present findings and observations.

 

Qualifications & skills: 

  • University Degree in Pharmacist   Experience background:
  • A minimum of 3 years working experience in Health, eye care service organization, or NGO is preferable.
  • Actively practicing in the field till the present dates.
  • Proficient in computers and relevant software applications and practice management technology.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
  • Possession of strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
  • Ability to achieve team goals while demonstrating organizational values and utilizing resources responsibly.
  • Ability to be proactive and take initiative.
  • Possession of strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, as well as, exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and build effective relationships with internal and external customers to achieve goals.
  • Exhibit high level of quality through attention to detail and monitoring of work.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
  • Deals with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment.

Preferred experience: 

  • Previous working experience in eye care service organization or nongovernmental organizations (NGO) health care facilities
  • Experience in preparing ophthalmic solutions
  • Experience of running/leading a pharmacy in a hospital

Experience in high volume cataract surgery campaigns
