Job Description


The Opportunity

The OTP/SC Nurse is responsible for the implementation of all CMAM-related activities including OTP, SC, and IYCF-E at the local level using participatory and community-based approaches. S/he is also expected to provide technical support and guidance to the respective health facility’s SAM services for severe acute malnutrition children and mothers. S/he is also responsible for providing technical capacity and supporting the service at the facility level and he/she works to compile progress reports, documentation, and sharing of best practices and lessons learned in food security and livelihoods.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND MAIN WORK ACTIVITIES

Carry out CMAM Program – SC/OTP and IYCF-E services/activities according to plans & national protocols (65%)

  • Provide technical and logistical support to the woreda health sector for the effective implementation of nutrition interventions and OTP/SC activities
  • Analyzing and reporting nutrition situation and prevailing trends
  • Promote gender equity and equality through each level of nutrition activities
  • Plan with HEWs and other health workers working in OTP/SC for effective, sustainable, and efficient implementation of nutrition interventions
  • Provide Woreda-level basic CMAM training and on-the-job training to HEWs/Other health professionals
  • Provide technical support to MoH health staff on the management of Sever Acute Malnutrition (SAM)
  • Will provide technical support in the OTP from screening to discharge (admission, treatment, follow up and referral) to provide care to under five years old malnourished children and uncomplicated severe acute malnutrition cases
  • Perform supportive supervision of OTP/SC activities and ensure they are implemented as planned
  • Supervising admission of patients to TFP and SFP
  • Supervising treatment and progress of patients
  • Ensuring adherence to and respect for current protocols
  • Will supervise and support the CMAM activities at OTP/SC level
  • Ensure the CMAM coverage reach above 50% for rural and above 70% for urban community and the other standard performance indicators are met appropriately
  • Ensure the nutrition items are provided to the health facilities and reach the intended beneficiaries
  • Establishing linkage with community leaders and representatives
  • Participate in health and nutrition-related assessments

Effectively implemented capacity-building activities for local health facilities (25%)

  • Provide continuous on the job training for the health extension and health workers to enhance proper case management and early case findings.
  • Organize and carry out health and nutrition training for partners where possible (e.g. technical workshops, training on SAM guidelines, IYCF and SAM guidelines, etc).
  • To follow up and provide ongoing technical support to the activities of the trained partners
  • To participate in the monitoring and evaluation of these activities, and to propose recommendations for developing future capacity-building strategies for Plan’s future action.

Coordinated with Plan- team activities (5%):

  • To collaborate and communicate with other Plan program teams (Finance, livelihoods, logistics, etc) to ensure harmonization of activities according to Plan’s mission strategy.
  • Inform/update to Project Coordinator – Health & Nutrition on nutrition activities on a regular basis.

Timely submitting all expected reports (5%):

  • Monthly activity report to be sent to the Project Coordinator including the achievements of the team for the past month and objectives for the following month.
  • Properly documentation of the SC, OTP and other Nutrition program activities.
  • End of mission and handover reports to be sent to the Project Coordinator before the end of mission.

Other Responsibilities

  • Within the scope of the role, there will be additional assignments by the immediate supervisor as needed.
  • Seek and promote innovative ideas and approaches to ensure the quality of work

Safeguarding Children and Young People (Safeguarding) and Gender Equality and Inclusion (GEI)

  • Understands and puts into practice the responsibilities under Safeguarding and GEI policies and Plan International’s Code of Conduct (CoC), ensuring that concerns are reported and managed in accordance with the appropriate procedures.
  • Ensures that the team members under supervision are properly inducted and understand their role in upholding Plan International’s safeguarding and GEI policies;
  • Ensures that Plan International’s global policies for Safeguarding Children and Young People and Gender Equality and Inclusion are fully embedded in day-to-day work.
  • Ensures that Plan Ethiopia contributes to Plan International’s global efforts to ensure safeguarding and GEI, including making sure that relevant reporting and data are submitted.

Job Requirements

Qualifications/ experience essential:

  • BSc in Nursing, and over 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • At least two years of practical experience in SC and OTP program management.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in an international NGO or similar organization.
  • Knowledge of policy and practice in the field of Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition and IYCF-E
  • Computer literate in word processing and Excel packages.
  • An understanding of child rights and their protection and fulfilment in the development context.

Qualifications/ experience desirable:

  • Has developed professional networks in the sector and in country government
  • Experience and/or strong professional links with work in this field in other countries
  • Specialist expertise in either Inclusion or Social and gender norm change

Language Required:

  • English language is an official communication.
  • Knowledge of the local language is an advantage criterion.
