Job Description


Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF Belgium) is an independent international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid in more than 70 countries to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters, or exclusion from healthcare.

Purpose of the Position

Plan, organize, and evaluate the activities concerning nursing and the team associated, according to MSF values, policies and protocols and universal health standards, in order to warrant the quality and continuity of the health care and the development of the plan of action.

Responsibilities

Accountabilities

  • Carry out the functions and tasks associated to nursing i.e. perform as a nurse or anesthetists, whenever required or needed, in order to optimize the resources, contributing with his/her knowledge and experience.
  • Implement all the protocols and hygiene procedures and supervise his/her team follow the same standards, in order to warrant the quality of the care and service in his/her specialty.
  • Organize and coordinate the activities of his/her team (week’s schedule, annual leave, absences, etc.), evaluate their performance and define and ensure the needs for training of staff, in order to ensure the coverage of the human resources needs and maintain high standards of quality.
  • Carry out and/or supervise the ( decentralized) pharmacy and medical equipment management (drugs orders, follow-up of the stock, storage conditions, inventories, follow-up of expired drugs and their destruction, drugs consumption, etc.)in his or her department, in order to satisfy the needs of material with efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensuring that all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Ensuring that cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to the protocols. Reporting any malfunction to the project biomedical service.
  • Carry-out and/or coordinate administrative (exit-paper, transfer-paper, etc.), information and data collection (patient files, forms, statistics, etc.) tasks, and elaborate regular reporting, in order to have updated and reliable information about the day-to-day activity in the project, output/ outcome and support decision-taking.
  • Give feedback/ reports to medical focal point.
  • MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

Nursing Practice

  • Supervise and monitor implementation of nursing guidelines Hospital
  • Ensure Nursing Team compliance of guidelines and protocols to provide quality care.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Ensure good teamwork with cleaners and observed schedule of their activities.
  • Ensure and monitor that Infection Prevention and Control protocols and guidelines are followed and observed in the hospital
  • Ensure monitoring of Medical and Biomedical Equipment with collaboration with the supervisor and logistic team.
  • Observe Standard precaution and 3 Pillars of IPC “Hand Hygiene, Disinfection and Transmission Based precaution” accordingly.
  • Report unnecessary actions concerning IPC to team supervisor for appropriate intervention.

Stock Management (Medical Supplies and Biomedical Equipment)

  • Supervise and ensure proper and accurate inventory of medical stocks.
  • Ensure that medical stocks provided in the department are properly monitored with accordance with IPC and Proper storage policy.
  • Ensure proper reception of stocks received from the Pharmacy and Logistic.
  • Collaborate with Pharmacist / Storekeeper regarding medical supplies.

Data collection and documentation.

  • Supervise proper documentation and ensure quality data collection.
  • Provide and report necessary data within the timeframe required by the department / facility.

Meetings and Participation

  • Pro-actively attend meetings and trainings to ensure good quality care to the patients as required by the manager.
  • Ensure to follow necessary activities in the project.
  • Collaborate with Nursing Activity Manager about use of protocols and guidelines.

Flexibility

  • Carry out tasks and functions to work different Nursing Position depending on the medical needs.
  • Possibility to assign in Mobile Clinics/Outreach team when needed.

Job Requirements

Education: Essential recognized nurse degree/diploma. Specialty (nurse or anesthetist) diploma essential. Desirable Bachelor in Science of Nursing. ·

Experience: Essential 2 years of previous experience. Having worked in MSF or other NGO’s and in developing countries is desirable. Desirable PHC, Nutrition, EPI and Outreach (Mobile clinic) experiences.

Language: Fluent English, Amharic and Tigrinya.
