Position Title: On call Nurse

Duty Stations: Shire (4), Mekelle (6), Debarq (4), Semera (4), Addis Ababa (4), Ayisaita (4), Dolo Ado (4), and Gambella (4)

Type of Appointment: Special Short-Term Daily Contract

Background

Under the overall supervision of the Chief Migration Health Officer for Ethiopia, the Head of Sub Office and the direct technical supervision of the Chief Migration Health Nurse, the incumbent will be responsible for the implementation of Migration Health Activities, Pre-departure Medical Screening, and provision of health assistance to refugees and migrants at the related Sub Office as necessary.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

The Escort is expected to carry out his/her duties in accordance with strictest moral and ethical standards and with due respect for gender and socio-cultural differences of the migrants. In particular, he/she will be responsible to:

  • Conduct daily nursing activities in relation to Medical Screening activities, Pre-departure Medical Procedures, Travel Requirements particularly at the related IOM Sub Office(s) or camp.
  • Support the planning and execution of mobile missions, assist with Pre-departure documentation, briefings and preparations as necessary.
  • Perform medical escort duties when required to ensure refugees/ migrants receive continued care throughout all phases of migration (before departure, during the journey and at the destination).
  • Conduct daily nursing activities at the Sub-Office to fulfil the technical requirements of the resettlement countries and in-country movements in the areas of:
    1. Medical examinations such as,
      1. Checking vital signs, weight, height, visual acuity;
      2. Blood, Nasopharyngeal, urine or sputum collection as required;
    1. Imaging; Laboratory testing; Vaccinations; TB management; Treatment and referrals; Documentation, Certification and information transmission; and other technical areas as may be required.
    2. Verify samples of sputum, blood, nasopharyngeal or others are properly transported to the laboratory or previously designated location.
  • Ensure confidentiality, proper identification and follow-up by ensuring accurate biodata collection; Identity verification and keeping good record of applicants who undergo health investigations, testing, physical examinations and travel.
  • Follow and implement Health Assessment activities, check lists, SOP’s and maintain standard universal precautions within the Sub-Office particularly the medical department.
  • Maintain and monitor available pharmacy stock, Medical supplies, Medical kits, Emergency kits, Medical escort bags within the Sub Office and report for replenishing when at low threshold level.
  • Collect statistical information and share with the Chief Migration Health Officer per pre-set and agreed upon format and prepare administrative reports and program updates as necessary.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with various partners to facilitate follow up and relevant information sharing. Partners include internal IOM teams, other health providers, panel physicians, camp authorities, other UN agencies, NGO’s and others as applicable.
  • Conduct pre and/or post counselling to migrants or refugees on expected IOM/MHD procedures including Migration Health Assessment processes; PDMS, treatments and referrals, TB/ HIV/ COVID-19 education, prevention, and management on relevant topics based on identified health problems in the area of operation as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned

Job Requirements

Education

  • University Degree in Nursing or relevant nursing education from an accredited institution;
  • A holder of valid licensure to practice in Ethiopia.;

Work Experience

  • At least three years of relevant professional work experience is required.
  • Experience of working with UN, local and international NGOs is an advantage
  • Excellent Technical Skills including phlebotomy.
  • Training or working experience in the areas of Tuberculosis management, Mass Immunizations, Communicable Diseases, sample collections for laboratory testing and Public Health.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Access)
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team and with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.

     

Languages:   

  • Knowledge of English language (Written & Spoken) is required;
  • Knowledge of Amharic and other local language is an advantage
