Job Description


Job purpose

The Officer for Natural Resource Management will be responsible for successfully facilitating, implementing and monitoring all required activities of all running projects in terms of natural resource management based on the donor approved project proposals and the operational agreements. For 2023 the Officer for Natural Resource Management will be in charge in particular for the project ‘Coffee-novation: Green Diversification of Ethiopia’s Garden Coffee Value Chain’

Main duties and responsibilities

Coordinate and facilitate activities towards the implementation of the natural resource related project components including:

  • Plan and implement a capacity building programme for garden coffee value chain and community-based reforestation
  • Support the production of garden coffee and its by-products and develop/ supervise the coffee husk briquette business case
  • Provide technical support for
    • establishment of tree nursery sites and cultivation of native tree seedlings
    • plantation of tree seedlings, management and recording of tree growth in plantation sites on degraded forest lands
    • Supervise and support the NABU rangers multiplier programme and community-focused monitoring programme
  • Conduct regular field trips as required and upon consultation of the Regional Office Coordinator at Office Bonga
  • Consider and work in line with all relevant regulations of Ethiopia.
  • Work closely in a team with the other project staff in the office and in another part of the country.
  • Document all processes appropriately and transparently
  • Keep separate time sheets for each of project

Advocacy and public relations:

  • Cooperate with and consult all relevant government authorities, project partners and subcontractors, local communities and all other stakeholders
  • Promote and present NABU’s work in Ethiopia, in particular, the running projects to national and international press/media and at related conferences
  • Assist in the planning and preparation of all kinds of meetings, conferences and field trips
  • Support documentation and reporting as per donor and government’s requirements (reports and photography)
  • Direct the general public to the appropriate staff member

Job Requirement

  • M.Sc. in Natural Resource Management, Forestry, or related fields with minimum 3 years of service after M.Sc.
  • Working experience of at least 5 years in Kafa Zone in biodiversity conservation/ reforestation, resource management and project management preferably in a CSO environment
  • Proven working experience in Participatory Forest Management (PFM), reforestation, green product development with farmers, and participatory community work in general
  • Working experience in the use of GIS and Remote Sensing software
  • Experience in non-timber forest products (NTFPs) development and marketing will be an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) in English and Kafinono
  • Experience with international visitors and donor visits
  • Advanced knowledge in MS office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.), Zoom and Teams
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • High level of professionalism, integrity and reliability
  • Willingness to regularly travel within the region

Office location: Bonga, Kafa Zone, Ethiopia, with frequent travel within Kafa Zone
