Job Description


Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) is a world leading organization committed to the treatment and reintegration of patients suffering from Obstetric Fistula and the training and deployment of qualified midwives to prevent Obstetric Fistula and other child birth injuries.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, in collaboration with stakeholders, has implemented a program called Project Zero with the aim of eradicating obstetric fistula from Ethiopia. We already launched this program at some part of Oromia region. We want also ensure this project in Tigray region, South Eastern Zone, Searti Woreda. The project work focus on identifying historic cases of obstetric fistula, and transferring to the Mekele Hamlin fistula treatment center for treatment. And continue to implement quality interventions for the prevention of new obstetric fistula cases by building the capacity of the midwives working in the region’s health facilities and improving the service rendered to all pregnant mothers. For the successful implementation of the program, HFE needs to employ experienced candidate to be part of the program’s interventions, trainings, and mentorship in the areas as per the given job responsibilities.

Job Summary

The Mentor will work to realize that the Hamlin model of Care and the latest global standards of health care will be practiced in the region. Midwife Mentor must have depth and breadth of technical expertise and experience in the delivery of maternal, neonatal, child, and reproductive health services. In addition, this position requires quality improvement approaches as well as current trends in service delivery, training and capacity building approaches that are based on scientific evidence.

Major Duties and Responsibilities of Midwife Mentor includes the following, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure that the program is technically sound, evidence-based, and responsive to the needs of the countries.
  • Work in collaboration with the Regional Health Centers where Hamlin Midwives are deployed to support aspects of the strategic direction and leadership of the maternal and child health programming guiding linkages and integration within the overall health sector.
  • Communicate and if necessary conduct meetings through possible communication means including phone, zoom and in person meetings with the project team, coordinator and project manager to provide regular updates on progress of achievements against set targets, program challenges and successes, as well as ways forward for on-going implementation.
  • Provide needed technical support for woreda health offices and other stakeholders in the prevention of obstetric fistula, identification and referral of historic fistula patients and facilitate their treatment.
  • Actively participate in Fistula Patient Identification Process, in collaboration with patient identification officer and other stakeholders in awareness creation, strengthen the existing referral system, and facilitate their treatment.
  • Submit report of prevention project, patient identification and survey of available pregnant women to the Team lead and to other concerned body when necessary.
  • Promoting community involvement of midwives’ activities.
  • Are Responsible for the implementation and coordination of the project with the project team.
  • Collaborate with the health extension workers and other involved groups in network creation during recruitment of pregnant women to the cohort.
  • Participate in base line assessments and end evaluations of the project
  • Travel between health facilities and woreda health office as needed
  • Explores best mechanisms and make ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the project
  • Ensures best documentation for the project activities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Place of Work or Project site: Tigray Region , South Eastern Zone, Searti Woreda

Mode of Employment: Contract for One year

Job Requirements

Qualification: Major Duties and Responsibilities of Midwife Mentor includes the following, but are not limited to:

Key competencies and professional expertise required:

  • Excellent skill of computer software packages; previous experience with
  • District Health Information System (DHIS) database packages preferred.
  • Fluent in English, Tigrigna, and Amharic languages and able to communicate with other local languages is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, intercultural communication skills, able to work well both within a team and independently under stressful conditions.
  • Proven clinical experience, working in the delivery of maternal, and child health service.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing service delivery protocols, norms and standards.

Education Requirement : BSc Degree in Midwifery and/or MSc in maternal and child health related fields

Work Experience : 4 + years’ experience in managing and coordinating maternal and newborn health system or program
