About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 15 Regional Offices, Zonal Branches and District/Woreda Branches, Woreda Red Cross Committee and Kebele Red Cross committees.

ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.

Job Title: Membership Development Senior Officer

Job summary

The Membership Development Senior Officer will lead the development and execution of ERCS’s membership programs, focusing on the recruitment, retention, and mobilization of members nationwide. This role involves cultivating a culture of member engagement while ensuring alignment with the humanitarian principles and mission of ERCS. The officer will implement innovative strategies, including digitalizing membership systems, to enhance operational efficiency, effectiveness, and accessibility.

Roles and Responsibilities

Specifically, the membership development senior officer is expected to carry out the following duties/responsibilities:

  • Supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive members’ recruitment strategy targeting diverse populations across Ethiopia, including urban and rural areas.
  • Coordinates national membership campaigns and local initiatives to raise the number of Red Cross members across branches.
  • Supports branches to create partnerships with schools, universities, local organizations, government institutions, Non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, and the private sector to expand their membership pools.
  • Supports branches to improve members’ retention, ensuring that members feel valued, supported, and motivated to continue their support for ERCS.
  • Facilitates the members’ recognition systems at the National level.
  • Design and implement innovative programs to increase member engagement and satisfaction.
  • Work closely with regional and zonal branches to align membership recruitment and retention efforts with ERCS’s overall strategy.
  • Facilitate communication and knowledge-sharing between branches, fostering collaboration and consistency in membership programs.
  • Regularly visit branches to assess membership initiatives, provide guidance, and address challenges
  • Spearhead the implementation of digital tools for membership registration, renewal, and tracking.
  • Oversee the creation and execution of membership development plans in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Analyze membership data, including branch-level metrics, to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Prepare and present regular reports, incorporating insights from regional and zonal branches, on membership growth and engagement outcomes
  • Ensure systems are user-friendly, accessible, and efficient for both central and branch-level operations.
  • Organize campaigns, events, and activities to mobilize and engage members nationwide.
  • Collaborate with branches to ensure regional and local activities align with ERCS’s priorities and humanitarian principles.
  • Support branches in adopting and optimizing digital membership systems, offering training and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Identify and address barriers to membership growth.
  • Liaisons with projects and other departments to support membership initiatives of ERCS.
  • Assesses and selects feasible digital tools and platforms for members’ recruitment and engagement.
  • Regularly follows up on branch membership performance and reports on the status of members’ recruitment/retention, and overall membership program.
About You

Job Specification:

  • Master’s or BA degree in Management, International Development, Public Administration, Regional and Local development, Development studies, Business Administration, Marketing, Leadership, Organizational development, Political Science and International relation and
  • 6/8 years of experience, with at least 3/4 years of experience in members’ management and community mobilization more preferably in membership based humanitarian or non-governmental organizations.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in digital systems and tools for membership management.
