Job Description


Purpose of the Job:

To enhance the safe and healthy enviroment of the company by Promoting and maintaining a strong safety culture within the employees under worksite procedures, facilitate operations and maintenance activities, employees and visitors.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in developing company’s strategy; communicate with other functional/departmental managers to understand all the necessary needs of Safety, Health & Environment.
  • Develop annual plan including the key performance, targets, needed resources and budget to achieve the Plant’s mission and strategic objectives.
  • Presents, analyze and compares the actual performance, expenditure of the department against the plan, through regular meetings with the Plant Manager.
  • Manage and control department expenditure within agreed budgets.
  • Identify a safe operating procedure that takes into considerations all relevant risks.
  • Develop and implement health, safety programs, environmental protection and fire prevention mechanisms.
  • Issue newsletters and instructions related to health, safety and environmental protection.
  • Follow-up all the department’s commitment to the policies, procedures and existing Programs.
  • Monitor the performance of the site in periodic emergency exercises and set different scenarios and put them in partnership with the sectors concerned.
  • Follow up removing of physical, chemical and biological barriers from the plant.
  • Follow the environmental performance and its compatibility with the requirements of environmental standards in Ethiopia.
  • Evaluate the readiness of the firefighting equipment.
  • Follow up the purchasing of the personnel safety tools, uniforms and any other safety equipment and their distribution.
  • Ensure the installation of safety signs & road marks.
  • Perform follow-up investigations to verify effectiveness.
  • Follow up the new legislation in the field of health, safety and environmental protection and any developments affecting the company’s operations.
  • Conduct risk assessment and search for solutions on how to reduce the risk.
  • Provide advices in the field of health, safety and environmental protection and fire prevention.
  • Follow up systems, methods and plans that ensure the protection of personnel and property from fires, work injuries and explosions and protect the environment from pollution.
  • Prepare root analysis after any accident happens and make an action plan to take some protective actions.
  • Prepare a monthly report with the health and safety performance and also a report for all the strengths or weaknesses areas.
  • Submit a detailed report with any injuries or accidents to immediate manager, the CEO and the department in charge.
  • Keep records of the accidents and incidents for periodical analysis to avoid and prevent future risks.
  • Facilitate the performance of training and practical experiments to ensure that the fire-fighting teams and different emergency teams adequately trained.
  • Identify and recommend team members training needs and individual development program.
  • Conduct performance review meeting and convey management policies to subordinates.
  • Ensure safety, accident & housekeeping preventions implemented well in the workplace.
  • Ensure the implementation of all government (Federal and Legal) regulations and requirements.

Generic Duties of the Position:

  • Develop and implement the Department’s strategic and operational plans and objectives.
  • Develop, approve and monitor the Department’s budgets.
  • Identify human resources requirements of the Department and develop plan for meeting the requirements.
  • Lead the development, implementation and review of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Review, approve and submit Departmental reports to relevant organs.
  • Support the development of subordinates through periodic performance evaluations, coaching, mentoring, on-going performance dialogue and feedback.
  • Manage disciplinary concerns of the Department’s staff.
  • Represent the Company in external relationships related with the Department.
  • Participate in group decision making processes by forming part of different groups/committees.

Job Requirements

Qualification and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Health and Safety, Engineering or related fields with six (6) years of demonstrated experience out of which three(3) years in a supervisory position

Or

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Engineering or related fields with eight (8) years of demonstrated experience of which four (4) years in a supervisory position.
