Project Description

Abt Associates, a major American business and government research, technical assistance, and consulting company, manages the USAID-funded VectorLink Project. The VectorLink Project will support the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and USAID to plan and implement an integrated vector control approach with the overall goal of reducing the burden of malaria. Abt has implemented indoor residual spraying (IRS) and entomological surveillance for PMI since 2011, delivering high-quality IRS programs and gathering the most comprehensive vector control entomological data in the world. Under PMI VectorLink project, the scope of the project has expanded and included two vector control methods: Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Nets (ITNs) and Larval Source Management (LSM) in addition to Indoor Residual Spraying. PMI VectorLink continues to assist PMI in reducing the burden of malaria through the implementation of vector control and capacity building in 22 African countries where malaria is endemic. Abt will also continue to support PMI in vector control, monitoring and evaluation, as well as environmental compliance.

Job Summary

Abt Associates seeks a Larval Source Management Regional Coordinator based in Kebri Dehar to support implementation and evaluation of PMI-funded LSM activities in towns around Kebri Dehar. Under the supervision of the Senior Larval Source Management Coordinator/Operation Manager, she/he will be responsible for LSM activities detailed below. This position is for a Nine-month contract period with possible extension.

Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordinates all activities of larvicide evaluation and larval source management in her/his assigned region/s.
  • Works closely with regional, zonal, district and town/city administrations and malaria focal persons to
  • Lead the recruitment and training of community mosquito collectors (CMCs) and community vector control technicians (CVCTs) and their supervisors in coordination with government counter parts.
  • Directly supervises the work of community mosquito collectors and community vector control technicians and their supervisors.
  • Ensure that the planned daily targets are achieved by CMCs and CVCTs and their supervisors.
  • Ensures timely data collection and checks data quality
  • Ensures safety and security training is provided for seasonal workers
  • Ensures that appropriate equipment, larvicides and personal protective equipment are provided to seasonal personnel
  • Supports the Larval Source Management Operations Manager in data management, analysis, and preparation of reports
  • Performs additional tasks as deemed necessary

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental health, applied biology, and any other relevant field
  • 4-6 Years of years of professional experience in coordination and supervision of vector control operations
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation
  • Good communication skills
  • Excellent computer and organizational skills

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree + Five years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree + Three years of relevant experience, or PhD
