Job Description


Title:                            INTERPRETER

Place of Work:             GUJI / Sababoru with displacements in the zone

Conditions:                  LOCAL

Salary:                         According to the new salary grid MSF

Contract:                     6 months with possible extension

MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION

Verbal interpretation, in person or remotely, during daily medical activities (medical round, consultations, interviews, meetings, etc.) and written translations, from the mission language to local language(s) or vice versa, in order to ensure accurate, respectful, fluent and confidential communication between medical staff and local population.

 RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  • Inform medical staff about important cultural nuances to consider during a meeting, medical consultation or interview with local people.
  • Participate in staff trainings and meetings as an interpreter.
  • Provide face to face interpreting, as well as during telephone and radio calls or other telecom devices, when necessary.
  • Adapt communication to any circumstances, using appropriate language registry as well as diplomatic and courtesy manners.
  • Translate MSF internal / external documents into local language(s).
  • Keep record of all translated documents.
  • Look after all equipment provided, i.e. dictionaries or other books that belong to MSF
  • Ensure confidentiality and medical secrecy.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

S/He will interprete and translate complex medical information to patients who speak a foreign language from the one the MSF staff is speacking. The medical interpreter will work in cloesd collaboration with different medical staffs in case of need at Darmee Health Center and during the outreach supervisions.

  • S/He will ensure the complete understanding of medical information between doctors, nurses, medical staff, and patients.
  • The medical interpreter role also entails acting as a medium of communication between medical professionals and patients by listening to professionals and translating verbatim patients’ responses back to the professionals, using proper medical terminology.
  • The medical interpreter work description may involve translating information such as the reason for medical visit, explaining surgical and medical procedures, providing drug information, past medical history and family medical history, and scheduling follow-up appointments.
  • During the outreach activities, cultural issues may arise between patients and professionals. S/He will at each visiting event try to avoid cultural issues.

Job Requirements

Education

•          Essential secondary education, university degree desirable, health knowledge advisable.

Experience

•          Not essential.
