Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is looking for qualified candidates to fill the following position.

POSITION Human Rights Officer, Human Rights Education
LOCATION Head Office, Addis Ababa

REPORT TO Coordinator, Human Rights Education Needs Assessment, Curriculum & Manual Development and Evaluation
DURATION One year contract with a possibility of extension
SALARY RANGE Gross monthly salary of ETB 20,400.00 – ETB 23,683.00 plus ETB 8,640.00 Housing allowance and ETB 3,300.00 Transport allowance, depending on candidates qualification, experience and earning history

Purpose of the Job:

To perform research and needs assessment to identify gaps, challenges and analyse emerging trends, design wide-ranging human rights education curricula, develop teaching materials and facilitate the mainstreaming of human rights education.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, review educational materials including lesson plans, online courses, manuals, and other educational resources focused on human rights topics;
  • Support the undertaking of research to ensure accuracy and relevance of human rights education content, as well as the mainstreaming of human rights topics in the curricula;
  • Conduct in-person and virtual workshops, seminars, and training sessions to educate diverse audiences about human rights by creating participatory learning environments that foster inclusive and safe spaces for learners;
  • Support in organization of educational events by planning and executing conferences, forums, and other events to promote human rights education;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders such as NGOs, schools, community groups, and other organizations to implement human rights education programs;
  • Keep up to date with the latest developments in human rights issues and educational methodologies;
  • Work with subject matter experts, educators, and stakeholders to gather input and feedback;
  • Collaborate with graphic designers to create visually appealing and user-friendly manuals;
  • Participate in continuous evaluation of the curriculum to ensure effectiveness and make improvements based on feedback and outcomes;
  • Closely work with relevant thematic functions in design of content, assessment of the quality of human rights promotion materials and avoid duplication on the content and effort between and among departments;
  • Provide advice to trainers on tools designed for the provision of trainings and the developed training materials. Prepare a discussion forum with trainers to have a shared understanding of best practices in human rights education;
  • Ensure that human rights education planning outcomes are highly effective and well aligned with the direction and set objectives;
  • Support the provision of strategic advice and high-quality tools to EHRC members to enable a shared understanding of best practice in human rights education;
  • Collect disaggregated data regarding human rights education and support in analysis of data;
  • Collaborate with other Officers in the department to set discussion forums within the department to have a shared understanding of best practice in Human Rights Education;
  • Participate in relevant working groups/committees, staff meetings;

Perform additional tasks as assigned

About You

Qualifications and Experience:

  • LLB/LLM in Human Rights Law, International Law or related fields.
  • 4 years of relevant experience for BA/LLB and 2 years of relevant experience for MA/LLM. Experience in curriculum development, instructional design, or educational program management is essential.
  • Strong research, writing, and editing skills. Proficiency in instructional design principles and familiarity with human rights issues. Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Computer literate
  • Knowledge of Amharic is required. Knowledge of other local languages is advantageous.
