Job Description


The Save the Children Fund, commonly known as Save the Children, was established in the United Kingdom in 1919 to improve the lives of children through better education, health care, and economic opportunities, as well as providing emergency aid in natural disasters, war, and other conflicts. After passing a century, which it celebrated in 2019, it is now a global movement made up of 29 national member organizations which work in 120 countries.

ROLE PURPOSE: 

The purpose of the Environmental health officer position is to Improve MHNT services through the provision of community mobilization. She/he provides overall technical, organisational support and plays facilitation role in communities she/he is assigned, includiing awareness creation and linkages of behavioural change through education, information and communication. She/he supports people’s empowerment, collective action and solidarity. Facilitates and encourages active participation of and networking between individuals and communities in recognizing problems, identifying solutions, and implementing project activities related to the identified solutions. Establishes and maintains close working relationship with IDPs in her/his working area in order to ensure that the messages are disseminated and understood at all levels. Build capacities of the community and institutions. She/he will be the link between the project and the community to ensure implementation of MHNT interventions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate the work of the team and manage operational matters
  •  Assess the potential risks for outbreak (active surveillance)
  •  Regularly update the woreda/zonal or RHB on immediately and weekly reportable disease
  •  Facilitate and lead with woreda/ zonal or RHB outbreak response, if outbreak is confirmed by the higher level.
  •  Responsible for daily health education program, based on selected topics alongside other health works
  •  Assess, identify and effectively utilize community-based communication plat forms for health promotion and disease prevention by engaging MHNT staff in the area.
  •  Provide health education with public health officer while the rest of the team are organizing the service provision.
  • Develop the movement plan of the team, compile weekly and monthly activity report or delegate the task, monitor supply utilization and request replenishments (monthly).
  •   Liaise with local authorities, represent the team in meetings and be responsible with all communications of the team.
  •  Do active surveillance with other stake holders
  • Coordinate the WaSH/ IPC activities (Latrine construction, Sanitation campaign, Waste management, Hand washing facilities and Water quality test

Education: Minimum of  Bachelor in public health nursing , health education /environmental health.

Experience:

  • Minimum three years working experience with similar position .
  • Experience in community  setups is mandatory.
  • Working with NGO is advantageous

Skills/Ability required:.

  • Solid technical skill on community mobilization.
  • Demonstrated skills in IEC/BCC.
  • Strong computer (Microsoft skills), and interpersonal skills.
  •  Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Good command in written and spoken English and Local language.
  • Good human relation skills.
  • Respect of Save the Children rules by anyone visiting the program;
  • Willingness to work under pressure and extra hours
