Job Description


The Save the Children Fund, commonly known as Save the Children, was established in the United Kingdom in 1919 to improve the lives of children through better education, health care, and economic opportunities, as well as providing emergency aid in natural disasters, war, and other conflicts. After passing a century, which it celebrated in 2019,[3] it is now a global movement made up of 29 national member organizations which work in 120 countries.

ROLE PURPOSE:

The health and nutrition coordinator will provide technical guidance for health and nutrition program monitoring, evaluation and reporting. To ensure that the health and nutrition program is technically managed, functioning properly, providing care of quality to all beneficiaries, respecting protocols and principles of good practice.

. She/he will support in the effective delivery of the health and nutrition program activities at site and community level. She/he will support the MOH in the development and delivery of training packages and monitoring tools.

SCOPE OF ROLE: Health and Nutrition Coordinator

Reports to: Health, Nutrition and WaSH Program Manager

Dimensions:

Staff directly reporting to this post: Woreda Health and Nutrition coordinators, Nutrition officers, Public health officers and MHNT team leaders

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Program responsibility, protocol and procedures:

  • Overall responsible for coordination of health and nutrition day to day activities at assigned project site
  • Plan and supervise implementation of project activities together with MOH counterparts
  • Provide technical guidance to mobile clinic activities and Nutrition activities
  • Ensure all staff understand project activities and implemented within the standard
  • Coach and capacitate MHNTs and Nutrition teams and make sure services provided with optimum standard
  • Coach and mentor MOH staffs working at different levels including woreda health office, health centres and health posts
  • Conduct training need assessment, health facility functionality and other assessments with MOH
  • Make sure appropriate distribution and utilization of supplies and equipment provided by SCI
  • Organize and facilitate trainings to health workers and health extension workers on different thematic areas
  • Organize and conduct post training follow up, routine supportive supervision and joint monitoring visits
  • Participate on regional level integrated supportive supervision and other monitoring visits
  • Organize and facilitate kick of meetings, review meeting and other events to enhance ownership and sustainability
  • Support effective implementation of IMAM nutrition programme in line with humanitarian standards
  • Lead and Support the Piloting of family MUAC in selected kebelles
  • Asses local capacity and ensure programmes are delivered according to relevant standards, polices, and program strategy
  • Ensure appropriate and consistent health, nutrition and WaSH education messaging provided in the communities
  • Facilitate and support in the development and scheduling of outreach activities to include support of MOH the work plan
  • Represent SCI in health and nutrition cluster coordination and technical working group meetings
  • Take part in the project set-up, technical support visit, monitoring visits, surveys and evaluations
  • Support in the management of essential drugs and medical supplies efficiently
  • Supervise, and build the capacity of health and nutrition team members in relevant technical competencies.
  • Ensure that the health and nutrition programme staffs have clearly defined objectives and understand their responsibilities.
  • With the support of MEAL team ensure project performance is tracked and quality standards adhered too
  • Coordinate any awareness raising campaigns/behaviour change communication in the community in coordination with MOH
  • Facilitate cross-sectoral programming, particularly to promote excellent communication and referral between different programs such as IYCF-E, CMAM, child friendly space, health, food distribution, WASH etc.
  • Conduct staff performance evaluation on regular bases
  • Follow up timely request, approval, procurement and distribution of the project logistics, supply and equipment
  • Work collaboratively to integrate the health and nutrition program with other sectors where appropriate, particularly with WASH, FSL and Protection.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly movement plan and reports and contribute for timely donor report
  • Identify lessons and best practices and share internally and externally for scale up
  • Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor

Other duties

  • Pays particular attention to the gender and diversity dynamics of patients and co-workers; Ensures that gender and power dynamics related to patients and co-workers are taken into consideration.
  • Engages and collaborate closely with SC’s Nutrition, Child Protection and WASH program.
  • Participates and assist in preparation/compilation of project medical data and monthly report
  • Participates in training to improve medical performance
  • Participates in outreach activities such as health and nutrition needs assessment, vaccination campaigns, mobile clinics and improvement of health promotion and hygiene in the community
  • Assists in emergency response to disease outbreaks, as needed
  • Be prepared to host visits and represent Save the Children international.
  • Prepared to report to the PHC facility for health emergencies Works as per allocated shift pattern/ rota

Trainings and capacity building:

  • Provide staff appraisals and supportive superstition
  • Conduct orientation and training to build the capacity of SCI staff, partners, and the community at large

Monitoring and reporting

  • Regularly update of databases and ensure quality checking at site
  • Prepare daily/monthly reports on activities and any necessary reports as requested
  • Updates follow-up information of enrolled cases from regular household visits and share with technical officers

Advocacy and communication:

  • Facilitate cross-sectoral programming, particularly to promote communication and referral, health, education and CP programming
  • Liaise with other humanitarian actors, partners and community groups to maximize collaboration and ensure proper coordination of activities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

ESSENTIAL:

  • BSC in Public Health, Medicine, Midwifery or Nursing
  • Desirable MPH in any field of public health
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience and must have at least one year experience in NGOs at similar position
  • Experience working in humanitarian context
  • Experience on organizing workshops and trainings
  • Knowledge on Standard methods and indicators for assessing nutritional status, including rapid assessment and SMART methodology
  • Experience on budget management
  • Proven experience on supervising and coaching staffs
  • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions
  • Computer literate, skills on Microsoft word, excel and internet
  • Fluency in in written and spoken English and local languages
  • Excellent interpersonal skill and able to work in a multicultural team
  • Passionate about improving the lives of children

Desired

  • Work experience in humanitarian emergencies at NGOs
