Overall job function:

Under the President’s Malaria Initiatives (PMI) funded Malaria Diagnosis and Treatment Activity (MDTA), provides comprehensive support on the implementation of gender related activities in malaria services to Federal Ministry of Health, Regional Health Bureaus, Regional Reference Laboratories/Public Health Institutes and health facilities. Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Party, the Gender Specialist is responsible for overseeing, coordinating and play vital role in the design and execution of gender assessment, analysis and development of gender strategy and its implementation to ensure that nobody is left behind in getting malaria services

 Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and execution of gender assessment, analysis and development and implementation of gender strategy related to malaria diagnosis and treatment
  • Work closely with the Chief of Party (COP) and Deputy Chief of Party (DCOP) in management and decision-making to ensure gender-related activities are integrated to routine program implementation and meeting client and stakeholder expectation
  • Lead the design and execution of activities that help increase the number of women and girls seeking malaria case management services
  • Provide technical assistance to RHBs in integrating gender into malaria related services
  • Work closely with the MDTA central and regional team to integrate gender related activities are integrated in routine mentorship program
  • Ensure that USAID gender policies, frameworks, and best practices are applied throughout all project activities
  • Create and update knowledge management products on experiences with gender integration
  • Collaborate with the project team on communication and monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) activities.
  • Advocate for the rights of vulnerable people to malaria infections through contact with woreda/zonal/RHB/MOH and other government officials, community leaders and elders, humanitarian partners and other relevant actors
  • Deliver formal and on-the-job training and coaching for MDTA staff
  • Monitor, assess, observe and report on key malaria-gender related activities
  • Deliver awareness raising and training for HCWs and community groups and other key influencers to increase awareness, capacity and support.
  • Provide support to other sectors as needed to deliver the program and mainstreaming activities
  • Represent the organization at national and regional gender related meetings, workshops and events
  • Integrate gender into MEL plans to develop a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework and gender-specific indicators for the program.

Job Requirements

  • University BA degree in gender studies, social sciences (a health background or additional degree in health is preferable)
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in gender analysis, planning, and integrating gender activities and inclusion into projects
  • Demonstrated ability to work with organizations to plan for and implement gender interventions, coaching, capacity building and training programs that facilitate behavior change among both women and men to create a more gender inclusive environment.
  • Ability to identify capacity development needs regarding gender knowledge, attitudes, and practices.
  • Excellent understanding of health/malaria and gaps in implementation of the activity
  • Excellent communication skills including ability to gain trust and build relationships with new communities
  • Experience in regular report writing
  • Ability to facilitate training initiatives to mainstream gender activities to ensure the differential needs, constraints, capacities, and priorities of women and men targeted by the project are understood and addressed
  • Experience identifying strategic interventions to increase capacity, supply and demand of women by creating an enabling environment for gender equality
  • Ability to mainstream gender into project activities and project management tools, including tracking of gender equality results and data
  • Experience integrating gender into MEL plans to develop a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework and gender-specific indicators for the program
  • Experience working with USAID and other large international donors is preferable
  • Excellent leadership skills including strategic thinking, decision-making, oral and written communications, ability to motivate and collaborate with others to achieve team goals
  • Proven ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
  • Fluency in English (reading, writing and presentation skills).

Travel Requirements

·         Approximately 50% travel to supported regions
