Main job purpose

  • The Finance Controller’s primary responsibility is to drive effective internal controls in the business, working through others to ensure implementation of the Group Financial Controls Framework and other related control frameworks.
  • The role owns and continuously improves the financial accounting and reporting process as part of the Record to Report process.
  • The holder will be required to manage the Source to Pay (S2P) process, including working with outsourced service provider(s) to deliver seamless payments and service and in addition oversee effective Tax management, controls and processes to mitigate any tax risks.

Key Accountabilities

Accounting & Reporting

  • Responsible to ensure strict compliance to the Unilever Accounting Manual, relevant IFRS and accounting standards
  • Supervise teams to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting for both group and local statutory reporting
  • Drive the balance sheet hygiene of the entity, including reconciliation and monitoring of GL accounts to ensure integrity of the ledger is maintained
  • Responsible for the timely and accurate Month end close process including overseeing all tasks required to close the month correctly.
  • Responsible to ensure achievement of the financial and accounting KPI’s e.g. Value at Risk

Financial Processes

  • Ensure that the Record to Report (RTR) and Source to Pay (S2P) Global Financial Controls is embedded and operating in line with the global model, including overseeing the onshore and offshore teams meet the set KPI’s
  • Pro-actively mobilise the risk management agenda, ensuring high quality risk assessments are conducted and risks are appropriately managed
  • Drive the Trade Working Capital Cycle (TWC) ensuring the forecast are precise and monitoring achievement
  • Understand root causes of issues / poor performance, identify where accounting and financial controls are not operating and drive remediation

Tax Business partnering

  • Manage tax risks across the business and interface with tax authorities to ensure tax exposure is minimised.
  • Lead the Tax team in managing tax risks, tax audits and tax appeals
  • Own and continuously improve the tax compliance processes in the business including maintenance of documentation, process improvement and activities to support 100% compliance

Managing stakeholders/ Expertise Areas

  • Supporting major business change projects from a controlling perspective
  • Partnering the business on risk, control and accounting topics
  • Manage the local Statutory Financial Audit end to end and ensure satisfactory conclusion within the timelines.
  • Ensure all Tax/Financial/Statutory/Internal Audit or other audit queries are satisfactorily addressed
  • Lead the review of the monthly/quarter performance meetings to review the Balance Sheet and Trial Balance and provide relevant explanations.
  • Manage and develop staff reporting into the role.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related course
  • Professional qualification in accounting (ACCA or Ethiopia equivalent)
  • Knowledge of IFRS standards and International Accounting Standards and their application Understanding of local regulations relating to accounting and taxation
  • Previous financial accounting experience – at least 6 years
  • Strong understanding of risk and controls
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Excellent engagement, presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to present complex information in a simplified manner
  • Strong attention to detail (accounting and reporting accuracy and identification of errors)
  • Strong process knowledge; structured and analytical in approach
  • Significant experience managing a large and complex set of stakeholders (including peers and 3rd parties) and holding others accountable
  • Significant experience in presenting to and communicating with senior Finance and non-Finance stakeholders
  • Demonstrated competency at growing and developing teams
