Job Description


Girl Effect is an international non-profit organization that builds media that girls want, trust and need while also working on the ground to engage rural girls and their communities and build evidence for the work that we do.

Context of the role

Girl Effect thrives to make maximum impact and measure its impact in the most effective ways.This role is a critical one to support in ensuring this objective is met both in terms of gathering insight to enable us to program for high impact, but also measuring that impact.

What you will do

  • Working with the local and Global team and with the Evidence and Impact Senior Manager, support in designing a market research and knowledge building strategy that effectively informs, monitors and evaluates the design and delivery of Yegna & other Girl Effect programs in Ethiopia against the objectives.
  • Work with E&I Senior Manager and support the implementation of the market research strategy.
  • Co-lead and facilitate quality control of all market research activities, including survey design, data collection, data analysis reporting and learning.
  • Work closely with the Evidence and Impact Senior Manager and Girl Effect teams and product leads to design research studies and ensure that TEGA research methods are fit-for-purpose, girl-centred, appropriate for different cultural and social contexts and effectively generating insights for internal and external end-users.
  • Work closely with the Evidence and Impact Senior Manager to quality assure research methods, tools, sampling design, data management, analysis and reporting.
  • Ensure Quality Assurance, conducting field visits to our implementing partner and support in the organization programme and projects including TEGA research projects and/or training.
  • Manage several qualitative formative, monitoring and evaluation research projects to inform Girl Effect brand strategy and creative content development in collaboration with the Evidence and Impact Senior Manager.
  • Ensure that Girl Effect’s ethical and safeguarding standards are upheld, and that field implementation is conducted to the highest standards, through training and oversight of field research partners in-country.
  • Carrying out literature reviews on specific themes and subjects as required based on the guidance of the Evidence and Impact Senior Manager
  • Collaborate with other department colleagues to facilitate the effective coordination of research and uptake of learnings.
  • Build and implement a strong project management process for the local TEGA team ensuring that reporting tools are in place and fit for purpose.
  • Track teams, agencies and local partners’ deliverables and flag to the Evidence and Impact Senior Manager if they are off track in terms of timeframe and/or budget.
  • Work closely with the create team, collaborate with Gender and SBCC manager and Safeguarding in creating impactful and measurable products.
  • Liaise with the Operations and Finance teams on contract management and invoice processing using Salesforce.

Who you are

  • Is confident in designing complex quantitative and qualitative research projects to meet challenging briefs, particularly relating to measuring social and behaviour change.
  • Have experience in complex project management and coordination, including implementation and monitoring, partner relationships, communication, and networking.
  • Have substantial experience in applied research or insights generation, ideally working agency side and serving large scale clients.
  • Has experience in managing fieldwork processes for data collection, for both qualitative and quantitative research projects.
  • Have strong experience in deploying innovative qualitative research methods and conducting data analysis – able to scope out appropriate approaches, oversee research delivery and quality assure data collection
  • Experience with innovative, participatory research approaches, and of working with young people and/ or girls specifically.
  • Experience delivering training, mentoring or capacity building young researchers, interns or volunteers is desirable.
  • Literate in mobile tech.
  • Is versatile and flexible in managing moving and changing timelines and briefs, in a busy and challenging environment.
  • Lateral thinking and an ability to bring fresh approaches to traditional issues or problems.
  • Shows excellent attention to detail and priorities quality and rigour in their work.
  • Excellent written and fluent spoken English & Amharic. Additional local languages are a plus.
  • Experience working in multicultural teams with varying expertise, skills, and backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with gender/girl-centred programming and research is desirable.
  • Is interested in the experiences of adolescent girls across the world and believes in supporting them to meet their full potential.
  • Strong communications and organisational skills, and the ability to work effectively with people from different professional disciplines in the private and public sectors.
  • Can-do, positive attitude and ability to take initiative.
  • Forward thinking and strategic

Job Requirements

Minimum experience required

  • Ideally a postgraduate degree or equivalent, preferably in statistics, economics and related fields;
  • 5 years experience in applied research and/or monitoring, evaluation and learning;
  • Experience coordinating research programs and managing fieldwork teams;
  • Experience with participatory approaches;
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research methods and data analysis;
  • Experience in strategic planning and knowledge management;
