Job Description


Mercy Corps is a global non-governmental, humanitarian aid organization operating in transitional contexts that have undergone, or have been undergoing, various forms of economic, environmental, social and political instabilities

DATES OF INTERNSHIP: Â June – September 2022

HOURS PER WEEK: Full-Time: 25-40 hours/week

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR THE INTERNSHIP: $2600/month

Mercy Corps Responsibilities

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

  • Housing (rented apartment)
  • Airfare (roundtrip)
  • Additional COVID-19 related Travel costs (including required COVID-19 testing and mandatory quarantine costs at both beginning and end of assignment)
  • ISOS Emergency Med-Evac coverage
  • Training and supervisory support
  • Access to Mercy Corps online tools
  • All other tools, materials and communication requirements for this projectÂ

Intern Responsibilities

Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:

  • Proof of medical insurance coverage (including COVID-19 treatment in country)
  • Laptop for working remotelyÂ
  • All other costs associated with the internship

The Database Development and GIS Internship will support the Mercy Corps Ethiopia mission to establish and support key systems and training for teams to be more effective and efficient. The role will work within the PaQ team and will have a strong team and network of resources to support learning and experience.Â

Deliverables

  • To create spatial data by building databases and linking geographic information for the provision of GIS analysis for Mercy Corps Ethiopia
  • Support in automating CARM database, Timesheet Management database etc.
  • Support the rollout of concept note management system (CNMS) and Institutional Performance Tracking systems (IPTS)
  • To work with departmental GIS users to capture information for use within the system, whilst enforcing procedures for maintaining data. Â
  • To provide basic training to internal GIS end users, including the maintenance of the GIS database.Â
  • To create/adapt basic training manuals for teams to continue to use GIS mapping Â

The Ideal Candidate

  • University degree in progress or recently completed (within 1 year) in relevant discipline, Software development or computer science
  • Motivation to learn and share experience and knowledge
  • Experience training teams and developing materialsÂ
  • Good communication and coordination skills
  • Adaptable and flexible in a shifting and changing environment

Living Conditions

The GIS & Database Internship is based in the capital city – Addis Ababa. The location is accompanied and secure. Housing is family accommodation with good freedom of movement beyond the house/office.
