Job Description


Link Education Ethiopia (LEE) is part of Link Education International (LEI), a family of not for profit organizations working together to transform education for children and communities across impoverished areas of Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda and Uganda. We guide governments and educators to adopt low-cost solutions to improve learning—with a focus on literacy, numeracy and inclusion—for the most marginalized children. LEI, based in Edinburgh, Scotland supports all project, M&E, fundraising, finance and governance activities in our four sub-Saharan partner countries.

Job Purpose

The Community Worker is responsible for contributing to the goal of the Boeing-funded ‘Supporting children in street situation’ project that would enable children in street situation to be literate and numerate at a foundational level, protect themselves from abuse/violence/exploitation, look after their health, hygiene, sexual health as well as social and emotional health. The community worker would mainly deliver non-formal literacy, numeracy, and computer literacy activities—as per Boeing’s focus on STEM—at a Child-friendly Learning Space located in Merkato—Addis Ketema sub-city which is run in conjunction with the national NGO CHADET.

Key Areas Of Responsibilities

  • Supporting non-formal literacy and numeracy activities that are engaging, relevant, and accessible together with social-emotional learning and life-skill sessions which provide key health/hygiene/sexual and social-emotional health to children living in street situation
  • Supporting the creation of a thriving learning environment that encourage participation, addressing potential barriers such as lack of motivation, previous negative educational experiences, or language barriers
  • Supporting access to reading materials and to technology (e.g. computers) and teaching children how to use them for educational purposes in a safe and constructive way
  • Assisting in strengthening where necessary robust safeguarding mechanisms with particular focus on having a robust Case Management System that is fit for purpose, including reporting, referrals and victim supportConnecting children in street situation with social services, healthcare, and education resources, while collaborating with schools, NGOs, community organizations, and government stakeholders to create a holistic support system for children in street situation
  • Assisting the Programme Manager in continuously  monitoring the progress of the project, including in conducting baseline assessment for the individual needs of children—understanding their family backgrounds, current living conditions, education history and opportunities for learning to tailor support programs effectively—and endline assessment to ensure children remain engaged and benefit from the educational opportunities provided.

Contract Type: Fixed Term – 10 Months Contract (with possibility of extension)

Reporting to: Link Education Ethiopia – Program Manager

Monthly Salary: ETB 19,000.00

About You

Experience And Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Social Work, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years proven experience in working with children, particularly those in vulnerable or marginalized situations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with children and families
  • Experience in educational programs, particularly in literacy and numeracy
  • Familiarity with technology and digital literacy programs for children
  • Empathy and compassion for children in difficult situations
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
