Job Description


The International Rescue Committee, one of the world’s largest humanitarian international NGOs, provides relief, rehabilitation and development support to vulnerable people and communities over 30 countries. We began work in Ethiopia in 2000 in response to severe drought in Ethiopia’s Somali region and are currently providing assistance to Ethiopians and refugees in six regions in Ethiopia, implementing emergency and development programs in health, water and sanitation, economic recovery and development (ERD), women’s protection and empowerment, education, child protection, and multi-sectoral emergency response.

Scope of Work/Job Purpose

The conflict that erupted in the Somali Oromo border regions in late 2016 has resulted in the displacement of thousands of people in Somali regions. In response to this crisis, the IRC proposes an emergency program which encompasses protection through immediate dignity kit assistance and community-based awareness sessions. Construction of women and girls wellness center. Under the direct supervision and JJ based CWI Manager and senior officer CWI Emergency Officer will ensure the emergency protection project’s implementation.

Detailed Responsibility And Tasks

  • Raise PRs for dignity kit materials and closely follow up with Supply Chain to ensure delivery of the materials on time.
  • Carry out skills-building sessions including handicraft activities, recreational activities and information dissemination sessions at Women and Girls safe spaces
  • Strengthen case management capacity through mentoring on CM and providing basic supplies including suspension files and file cabinets to BoWCA.
  • Establish and strengthen one Women and Girls safe spaces in Afdem woreda.
  • Organize age-gender and culturally appropriate psychosocial support programming for children and women in a safe space
  • Mini campaign on consequences of FGM and child marriage.
  • Establish and strengthen community dialogue groups with influential local figures on harmful practices, referral pathways, and timely reporting mechanisms
  • Conduct monthly coordination meetings the BoWCA, Woreda administration officials, Disaster Risk Management Commission and regional UNICEF office.
  • Awareness raising activities including community dialogue sessions on GBV.
  • Conduct a field visit to targeted IDP sites and initiate discussions with the relevant government actors and community leaders on the selection criteria of beneficiaries and strategies for distribution.

Qualifications

  • First degree with 2 years of experience in Social Work, Sociology, Public Health, Women’s Studies, or any other Social science related field.
  • Related work and field experiences in counseling or social service provision with women and adolescent girls.
  • Demonstrated confidence in discussing intimate gender and sexuality issues.
  • Able to maintain GBV and protection principles at all times – including knowledge and practical application of the GBV Guiding Principles and PSEA.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, coordination, and diplomatic skills required.
  • Able to organize, maintain composure and prioritize work under pressure, able to coordinate multiple tasks and maintain attention to details.
  • Willing to travel to potentially insecure sites with an IRC vehicle or rental vehicle, with security assessment and travel approval by the field coordinator
  • Ability to communicate in English and Somali required.
  • Familiarity working in Somali region.
  • Ability to use MS office, word, excel, and outlook email applications very well.
