Job Description

Summary of Key Functions and Accountabilities

  • Produce a wide variety of content for UNICEF’s programmes and response to emergencies and development programming.
  • Supports in-house production of high-end audio-visual and visual materials with graphics for social media.
  • Effective and timely professional assistance and support are provided in developing, drafting and maintaining contact information and relationships with journalists and media outlets to encourage coverage and interviews on UNICEF’s programmes and emergency response.
  • Support in conceptualization, budgeting, planning and implementation of UNICEF’s digital and social media strategies for major initiatives and integrated advocacy campaigns to strengthen UNICEF’s efforts in maximizing UNICEF Ethiopia’s voice, reach and engagement.
  • Coordinate and facilitate events in collaboration with programme sections and partners and support the visibility and coverage of the event in media and for UNICEF Ethiopia’s digital platforms.
  • Help organise and generate public support for special events and activities to promote UNICEF goals.
  • Gather human interest stories to be used in various formats (feature articles, web features, photo stories, and videos) to showcase UNICEF’s role in emergencies and development programmes.
  • Work with freelance photographers, writers and videographers to prepare a wide variety of coverage of UNICEF’s programmes and response to emergencies.
  • Draft background briefing notes media, donor, UNICEF National Committees and other special interest groups for visits. Assist in the planning, logistic and administrative arrangements for visits. Coordinate and facilitate donor visibility for donor visits as needed.
  • Provide timely emergency-focused contributions for the national, regional and international online platforms.
  • Promote a better understanding of, respect and support for children’s and women’s rights and issues by carrying out advocacy activities in support of UNICEF programmes and humanitarian efforts in Ethiopia.
  • Ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the media, UNICEF National Committees, local individual and corporate donors.
  • Ensure or enhance the quality, consistency and appropriateness of country-specific communication materials, activities, processes and messages shared with partners.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field
  •  first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience in communication, print and broadcast media, or interactive digital media.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity in operating in humanitarian contexts is considered an asset.
  • Experience in content gathering (story, photo and video) from the field to document UNICEF’s programme.
  • Experience in editing photo and videos for the web and social media (desirable).
  • Experience in organizing high level events and working with Government partners.
  • Ability to shape editorial and system content planning from overall communication and advocacy strategy for implementation.
  • Experience and current in digital and social media content and audience trends with due consideration of geographical regional differences.
  • Prior content strategy/management experience working with a global organization, especially working on projects of similar scale, involving multiple users and groups.
  • Direct experience managing digital communication channels (web and social media channels). Ability to draft, publish content on digital platforms.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in digital communication strategy and engagement and knowledge of best-in-class digital media platforms.
  • Background/familiarity Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
