Job Description


The International Rescue Committee, one of the world’s largest humanitarian international NGOs, provides relief, rehabilitation and development support to vulnerable people and communities over 40 countries. We began work in Ethiopia in 2000 in response to severe drought in Ethiopia’s Somali region and are currently providing assistance to Ethiopians and refugees in nine regions in Ethiopia, implementing emergency and development programs in health, water and sanitation, economic recovery and development (ERD), women’s protection and empowerment, education, child protection, and multi-sectoral emergency response.

Job Overview:  

The position holder is responsible for implementing community-based child protection program in Chinaksen, Kersa, and Goro Gutu woredas. The position holder will lead all aspects of the prevention and response activities of the program that include working with the community, psychosocial support activities, and case management.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist the team in the assessment of the living conditions of children in the IDP/Returnee community centers and participate in the development of an appropriate strategy in addressing their needs.
  • Facilitate the involvement of children and women the community (leaders and parents) in the child-friendly space center and document the progress made.
  • Support community leaders and government sector focal persons in the monitoring, verification, and documentation of children cases.
  • Follow-up the preparation and implementation of case action plan and conduct home to home visit including outreach programs.
  • Carry out data Entry into the Child Protection Information System (CP IMS) database.
  • Support the child protection officers in facilitating and coordinating appropriate care arrangements, and suitable alternative care systems with close supervision and attention to the individual concerns of children.
  • Through working with CP committees identify potential foster families for unaccompanied and separated children in collaboration with social workers and community leaders.
  • Organize and facilitate positive parenting weekly sessions and awareness sessions.
  • Assist the child rights clubs to demonstrate to the community and the concerned bodies about protection concerns that children are facing and promote the participation of children in all matters affecting their lives.
  • Organize and lead psychosocial support activities at (the Safe Healing and Learning Space (SHLS)
  • Work closely with the CP officer in the celebration of international events days and other awareness-raising sessions.
  • Participate with partners, and the team leaders in conducting the Best Interest Assessment to ensure the needs of children are addressed.
  • Support the preparation of budget, work, and spending plans, and PR tracking to supervise the accurate utilization of the budget and timely implementation of activities.
  • Adhere and fully abide by the child protection code of conduct.
  • Shall take any additional responsibilities as requested by supervisors.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • 2 years of relevant work experience for diploma holders
  • University degree fresh graduates in Social work, Sociology, public health, or any other Social Science related field.

Preferred experience & skills:

  •  Good communication and social skills with children and individuals from a variety of backgrounds
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-tasking skills.
  • Team spirit and problem-solving skills.

Language Skills: 

  • Language Skill of English, and Amharic.
  • Fluent spoken and written Afan Oromo is advantageous.
