Job Description


The Bahir Dar Specialty Eye Center (BDSEC), an initiative of Cure Blindness Project, has finalized its office set-up and is expected to become a leading institution in the fight against avoidable blindness in East Africa. For over 25 years, the initiative has been at the forefront of global efforts to eradicate avoidable blindness by developing high quality, cost-effective eye care systems in underserved regions. It has facilitated over 1.4 million sight-restoring surgeries and screened more than 14.5 million people, providing essential care and treatments to those in need.

In addition to these surgical achievements, the initiative has trained over 19,500 eye health professionals and established five eye hospitals around the world. As part of its continued commitment to improving global eye health, BDSEC is proud to introduce a state-of-the-art facility in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

BDSEC will offer advanced cataract surgeries and a wide range of specialized eye examinations and surgical procedures.

BDSEC is seeking to recruit a team of highly skilled health professionals who will play a crucial role in the Center’s mission to restore sight and improve the quality of life for countless individuals in the region. We invite qualified candidates to apply for the following key positions

Position Summary:

The Anesthetist performs a range of duties which includes preparing the patient for general anesthesia, administer anesthesia, monitor patient’s vital signs, and oversee patient recovery from anesthesia. Instructs / guides, nurses or other staff on topics such as anesthetic techniques, pain management and emergency responses.

About You

Duties and responsibilities: 

  • Manages patients’ airway or pulmonary status using techniques such as endotracheal intubation and extubating, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, and respiratory therapy.
  • Competent in managing general anesthesia related complications that may occur.
  • Selects, prepares, or uses equipment, monitors, supplies, or drugs for the administration of anesthetics.
  • Selects, orders, and administers anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids or blood products.
  • Perform pre-anesthetic screenings including physical evaluations and patient interviews, and documents results. Monitors patients’ responses including skin color, pupil dilation, pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ventilation, or urine output using invasive and noninvasive techniques.
  • Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administering emergency fluids or drugs, or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Develops anesthesia care plans.
  • Obtains informed consent from patients for anesthesia procedures.
  • Assesses patients’ medical histories to predict anesthesia response.
  • Performs and evaluates the results of diagnostic tests such as radiographs (x-rays) and electrocardiograms (EKGs).
  • Performs or manages regional anesthetic techniques such as local, spinal, epidural, caudal, nerve blocks and intravenous blocks.
  • Evaluate patients’ post-surgical or post-anesthesia responses, taking appropriate corrective actions or requesting consultation if complications occur. Administers post-anesthesia medications or fluids to support patients’ cardiovascular systems.
  • Discharges patients from post-anesthesia care.
  • Accurately records all information in EMR system according to established standards
  • Reads literature, talks with colleagues, and participates in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in nursing.
  • Attend weekly team meetings and be prepared to present findings and observations.

  • Working Under Pressure – Ability to complete assigned tasks under stressful situations

Qualifications & skills: 

  • Educational background: Bachelor of Science in Anesthesia
  • A minimum of 3 years working experience in Health, eye care service organization, or NGO is preferable.
  • proficient in giving Retro bulbar/per bulbar injections & sub tenons blocks .
  • Actively involved in patient care service till the present date.

Preferred Experience: 

  • Experience in giving retro bulbar/Peri bulbar injections in High Volume Cataract surgery campaign.
  • Experience in giving sub tenon’s injections.
  • Previous working experience in eye care service organization or non-governmental organizations (NGO) health care facilities.
