The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) wants to recruit employees in the following vacant positions the details of which are mentioned bellow.

About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society 

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches and 131 District/Woreda Branches, 599 Woreda Red Cross Committee  and 5871 Kebele Red Cross  committees.

ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.

Background of the project

Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) is seeking for an Accountant for USAID/Ethiopia Health Resilience Activity.

The USAID/Ethiopia Health Resilience Activity is a 5-year project (28th Mar 2023 – 27th Mar 2028) aims to strengthen local capacity to detect, prepare for, respond to, and mitigate the impact of public health emergencies and ensure the continuity of essential health services during emergencies. The Activity will result in improved local capacity and health system resilience in focus areas through strengthening woreda leadership and capacity to manage emergencies; improving early warning and alert response system (EWARS) and data management capacity; developing core capacity on gender in emergencies (GiE); and increasing innovative funding for emergencies, leading to reduced morbidity and mortality related to public health crises.

Management Sciences for Health (MSH) and the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) will work together and in close collaboration with zonal and woreda offices, health facilities (HFs), communities, and other stakeholders to achieve these results. The USAID/Ethiopia Health Resilience Activity will focus on selected woredas in three regions (Amhara; Oromia; and South Ethiopia) and one city administration (Dire Dawa).

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Senior Accountant and Accounts Division manager Branch head & Branch Admin and Finance head, the accountant will be responsible for the proper and sound classification and codification of accounting records by the accounting system in place and the reporting requirements of the stakeholders; registers account transactions by the accounting software system and accounting procedure manual of the Society; reconciles books of accounts with bank statements; investigates correctness of accounting records and organize the documents of the branch and reports to HQ ERCS.

 

Responsibility 

  • Ensures completeness of documents and prepares appropriate classification of codes.
  • Reconciles core cost and project accounts with bank statements.
  • Prepares trial balances, worksheets, and other interim statements.
  • Registers/records account transactions in accordance with the accounting software system and accounting procedure manual of the Society.
  • Checks and verifies payment requests against availability of budget and presents same to the senior accountant for further treatment.
  • Provide financial and technical support on budget and actual expenditure review, and monitoring, coordinating trainings to programs.
  • Adjusts and reconciles accounts records.
  • Extracts account balances from subsidiary and general ledger accounts and assists in preparation of financial reports and statements.
  • Prepares monthly statements of bank reconciliation and adjusting entries.
  • Follows up and facilitates the timely delivery of reports of the zonal branches.
  • Compiles project fund spending data of the projects in the branch and sends to HQ.
  • Makes the necessary reconciliations of project accounts with HQ.
  • Classifies and codifies accounting documents in accordance with the accounting system in place and the reporting requirements of the stakeholders.
  • Take regular backups of the Area office financial data to make the appropriate records.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities of the job as assigned by the Branch head, branch Admin, and Finance head.

  • Smooth partnership and responsiveness.
  • Scan and maintain documentation to facilitate monthly invoice settlement.

Work Unit : Finance, Dire Dawa Branch

Reports to : Branch Head

Terms of employment : Contract for one year with possible extension based on performance

Place of Work : Dire Dawa Branch

Salary : as per organization pay scale plus other ERCS staff benefits

About You

Qualification Requirements

  • Master / Bachelor’s degree in Financial Management, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field of study.
  • 4/6 years of relevant experience in Master’s and Bachelor’s respectively
  • Communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of the local language is desirable.
  • Good personal organizational skills.
  • Ability to work within a multicultural setting.
  • Willing to travel extensively within and outside the Zone/region.

Other Skills

  • Previous experience with USAID or other USG-funded projects is an advantage.
