Job Description


Kurmuk Gold Mine PLC (KGM), a subsidiary of Allied Gold Corp., a publicly listed company on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), is engaged in gold mining operations across multiple countries, including Ethiopia, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire. KGM operates with a Large-Scale Gold Mining License and holds three contiguous Exploration Licenses for its project in Ethiopia.

The project is strategically located in western Ethiopia, approximately 750 km from Addis Ababa and about 90 km northwest of Assosa, within the Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State. KGM is actively involved in both mine development and exploration activities at the site.

Purpose of the job:

The Management of KGM is seeking to employ a dedicated, experienced and self-motivated individual to fill the position of HSE Manager. This role is pivotal in ensuring a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace, aligning with our commitment to sustainable mining practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental Management:
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental plans and procedures for all project activities, in alignment with KGM management standards.
  • Identify and manage all HSE risks, including both business and operational risks associated with the project.
  • Communicate all HSE standards, plans, and procedures to employees and contractors working on the mine.
  • Risk Management and Incident Prevention:
  • Lead a risk-based model for HSE management (Lead the development and maintenance of the KGM site risk register)
  • Lead a culture of reporting hazards, assessment incidents, and near-miss events, ensuring these are thoroughly investigated and corrective actions are taken to prevent recurrence.
  • Take proactive measures in visible HSE initiatives (e.g., workplace inspections, attending HSE meetings, conducting internal audits, reporting hazards, and making behavioral observations) to improve mine-wide HSE performance.
  • Accountability and Disciplinary Actions:
  • Lead by example to help set the expected level of accountability and general professional conduct
  • Hold all personnel accountable for their HSE actions and implement appropriate disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Environmental Management:
  • Oversee environmental management programs, including monitoring, land rehabilitation, water management, waste management, and other key environmental functions.
  • Team Leadership and Site Operations:
  • Manage a lean on-mine HSE team to ensure site-specific HSE requirements are met during operations.
  • Ensure all site personnel understand their HSE roles and responsibilities, and are aware of performance expectations, as outlined in role descriptions and KPIs.
  • Effective Communication and Support:
  • Maintain effective communication with all personnel to ensure understanding and support for the HSE goals and aspirations of Allied Gold and Kurmuk Gold Mine.
  • Support the development and delivery of on-the-job and external HSE training programs for relevant KGM personnel.
  • Training and Development:
  • Develop training matrices for HSE personnel, outlining key skills, development plans, and goals.
  • Contribute to succession planning by ensuring continuous people development within the department.

About You

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

  • A tertiary qualification/diploma in the field of Health, Safety and Environment from a recognised institution
  • Minimum 8 – 10 years’ operational experience in HSE preferably in the open pit mining industry of which 3 years should be at management level
  • HSE principles, systems, technologies, and trends
  • HSE metrics and reporting
  • Ability to make critical decisions based on individual cases
  • Holding people to account
  • Planning and anticipation of risks
  • Solution orientated
  • Experience in ERP systems and basic computer skills
  • Written and spoken English, with Amharic being an added advantage
  • Able to work within tight timelines, maintaining accuracy and efficiency of assigned tasks
