Title: Programme Development and Quality Intern/Trainee

Location: Addis Ababa

Contract Duration: Six Months (6)

INTRODUCTION

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), an international non-governmental organization (NGO), has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. DRC promotes and supports solutions to the problems faced by refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and migrants. The organization has offices across the region and has been operational in Ethiopia since 2009. With funding from bilateral and multilateral donors, DRC is currently implementing a range of activities across Ethiopia, including WASH and shelter provision, child and youth protection, gender-based violence response, awareness-raising of migration risks, protection monitoring of migration routes, and livelihoods support for returning migrants or those at-risk of migration.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The Programme Development and Quality Intern plays a crucial role in the DRC Ethiopia Programme team by providing administrative support and assisting in tasks relating to proposal development and reporting, as well as providing support to the PDQ Manager in her daily work. The intern will contribute to the success of DRC’s mission by supporting high-quality programme development and ensuring efficient grants management processes. The intern will receive mentorship from the Programme Development and Quality Manager, with regular check-ins to support their professional growth and understanding of the humanitarian sector.

This is a full-time position. DRC offers interns a stipend, and a transport allowance.

Responsibilities and tasks

Responsibilities: (in bullet points)

  • Assist the Grants Management Unit with administrative tasks relating to proposal development, donor reporting and other grants-related priorities.
  • Ensure that all relevant documents are filed in Programme Unit SharePoint.
  • Provide Admin support to the PDQ Unit, including tracking substitutions, setting up Teams meetings, and taking minutes at all grants-related meetings.
  • Provide support to donor reporting proposal development through copy editing and background research.
  • Provide ad hoc support to the Country Office team on managing meetings, trainings and other events.
  • Liaising with Area Offices: Provide support in communication with DRC’s area offices in Ethiopia (Gambella, Tigray, Somali, and Afar) to ensure coordination on programme development efforts.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the PDQ Manager or Head of Programme in the Grants and Programme Unit.

Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

Technical Competencies:

  • Communication & Coordination: Ability to convey information clearly and manage tasks effectively.

  • Computer Skills: Good general computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Research Skills: Ability to conduct background research on donors, programmes, and sectors relevant to DRC’s work.
  • Proposal Writing: Basic understanding of proposal writing processes and donor requirements.
  • Data Management: Ability to organize and track data or documents efficiently, possibly using software tools or databases.
  • AI prompting & Search Engines: Skills with prompting AI or chatbots like ChatGPT and using search engines.

  • Is enrolled at a university for a relevant education, with a minimum of two years of higher education completed, or have graduated from a university maximum 2 years ago

  • Excellent verbal and written proficiency in English.
