Job Description


sequa gGmbH is a globally operating non-profit development organization. Since 1991, sequa has carried out programmes and projects of international cooperation in close collaboration with the German private sector. sequa offers know-how and long-term experience in capacity development for chambers and associations (BMOs), vocational education and training, private sector development and trade promotion. The organisation is based in Bonn, Germany. sequa employs more than 100 persons (2023) and reported a turnover of EUR 60 m in 2023.

 

We are offering a project-based assignment as

 

The Project

Within the GIZ Program Special Initiative “Decent Work for a Just Transition”, sequa implements the “SME Support Scheme targeting growth-orientated SMEs” project in Ethiopia. With this, sequa aims to facilitate business growth and job creation of Ethiopian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by increasing their competitiveness and productivity so that their products and services will satisfy the demand on local and international markets. A specific focus will be provided on women-owned SMEs, job creation, and employability training for women.

Benefiting companies receive flexible and demand-oriented funding (management consulting, technical training, financial competence/business plan development, qualification, applied research activities, etc.). A particular focus will be on advisory services to improve access to finance. The grant scheme will contribute to SMEs’ change management and business growth.

As per the occupational safety and health (OSH) assessment conducted on 25 manufacturing SMEs, only 52% are equipped with first aid kits and only 8% have adequate number of currently trained first aid responders. Consequently, sequa aims to improve the working conditions and ensure workplace safety through the facilitation of first aid training.

The objective of first aid training is to create a safer environment and ensure rapid, effective responses to accidents or health emergencies. These include:

  • Immediate Response Preparedness: Equip employees with the skills to provide immediate assistance to injured or ill coworkers before professional medical help arrives.
  • Minimize Severity of Injuries: Train employees to prevent injuries from worsening by providing early and appropriate care, which can reduce the severity of injuries and aid in quicker recovery.
  • Promote Health and Safety Awareness: Increase awareness of workplace hazards and teach preventative measures, encouraging a culture of safety.
  • Reduce Workplace Incidents: Empower employees to identify potential hazards and act proactively, potentially lowering the frequency of accidents or emergencies.
  • Compliance with Legal Requirements: Ensure the organization meets national and local occupational health and safety regulations.

Your Tasks / Responsibilities

The first aid training should at least cover the following key contents:

Life-Saving Techniques:

  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): Including adult CPR and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Choking Management: Techniques to relieve choking, particularly for situations where machinery could be involved.

Bleeding and Wound Management:

  • Severe Bleeding Control: Use of pressure, tourniquets, and bandages to control heavy bleeding due to cuts from sharp machinery.
  • Puncture and Crush Injuries: Treatment methods for injuries from heavy machinery and tools, including cleaning, dressing, and stabilizing wounds.

Fractures, Sprains, and Dislocations:

  • Bone and Joint Immobilization: Techniques to stabilize fractures or sprains commonly associated with falls or machinery incidents.
  • Splinting: Proper use of splints to immobilize injured limbs, especially critical in areas where equipment and tools are used.

Chemical Burns and Poisoning:

  • Chemical Exposure and Burns: Procedures for flushing and neutralizing chemical burns to the skin and eyes.
  • Inhalation of Toxic Substances: Recognizing symptoms of chemical inhalation and emergency response, such as moving the person to fresh air or using personal protective equipment (PPE).

Burn Treatment:

  • Thermal Burns: Treatment of burns caused by hot surfaces, flames, or steam, including cooling and dressing techniques.
  • Electrical Burns: Procedures for handling electrical burns and ensuring safety around electrical equipment.

Eye Injuries:

  • Foreign Objects in the Eye: Safe methods for eye irrigation and foreign body removal.
  • Eye Wash Station Training: How to use eye wash stations effectively in case of chemical or particulate exposure.

Machine Entanglements and Crush Injuries:

  • Quick Response for Machine Entanglements: Protocols for responding to situations where a worker’s clothing or body becomes entangled in machinery.
  • Managing Crush Injuries: Techniques for responding to crush injuries, including monitoring for signs of shock and using stabilization methods.

Electrical Safety and Electrocution Response:

  • Handling Electrocution Incidents: Techniques to safely remove an individual from live electricity and provide treatment for electrical shocks.
  • Lockout/Tagout Procedures: Familiarization with procedures to ensure machinery is safely shut off before providing assistance.

Fire Safety and Burns:

  • Fire Response and Evacuation: Basic fire safety, including using a fire extinguisher, recognizing safe exit routes, and assisting others during an evacuation.
  • Burn Treatment: Specific protocols for treating burns caused by equipment and electrical malfunctions.

Emergency Preparedness and Communication:

  • Assessing the Scene: Understanding hazards before providing aid.
  • Calling for Help: Steps for contacting emergency services and providing necessary information.
  • First Aid Kits and Equipment: Familiarization with contents of a first aid kit and their uses.

About You

Your Qualification / Skills

  • Excellent knowledge of the latest first-aid guidelines, protocols, and best practices.
  • Having valid, up-to-date certifications in first aid, CPR, and AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) use.
  • Ability to guide, assess, and give feedback effectively.

Your Working Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in emergency response (e.g., EMT, paramedic, or nurse) is required.
  • Proven teaching experience particularly in the manufacturing sector.
