Job Description


Job Summary

  • The Counselor will work closely with OV children, teens and young adults in the care system with the mission of ensuring mental health where assessment, follow up and support are provided on a one-to-one and/or group setups. The counselor will conduct psychological assessments and/or tests and develop and implement an individualized treatment plan for each child and also provide one to one and/or group counseling services. The counselor will also regularly be consulting, advising and training house parents on ways of dealing with teenagers and responding to certain behaviors. Additionally, he/she will keep complete documentation and records of assessments and treatments.
  • The counselor will be helping children and young adults in the program improve and maintain a balanced and healthier mental-state with focus given to children’s advancement in the understanding and acceptance of their past, present and future life so they develop a stable mental capacity to achieve better in their lives.

Job Responsibility

  • Minimum of Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology and/or Child Psychology with a minimum of 5 years working experience in related field
  • Previous experience working with institutionalized OV children and youth is desirable
  • Proven English speaking and writing skills with recorded experience of report writing
  • The ability to update oneself and invest on personal growth to current and ongoing development of field of service
  • Must have a sincere interest in helping vulnerable children
  • Having good social and relational skills is advantageous
  • Good character to encourage, motivate and influence children to good behavior

Job Requirement

  • MA/BA in social work, sociology, psychology or any other related field of social science
  • 5 years of relevant work experience out of which a minimum of 2 years is in in a child/youth welfare organization
  • Having worked in projects that are related to governmental orphanages and their residents is a plus
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, Amharic. Knowledge of any other local language is a plus
  • Awareness and understanding of social development issues
  • Ability to work under high pressure.
  • Positive and professional approach: highly organized, results oriented, using initiative and keeping commitments.
  • Computer literacy
  • Problem solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills

Essential Skills

  • Good character to encourage, motivate and influence children to good behavior.
  • Acceptance and adoptability to work with vulnerable children who might have difficult background and challenging behavior
