Job Description


The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East, West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia.

The Position:

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a dynamic communications specialist for the office of the Director General’s Representative to Ethiopia and support various communication and knowledge management activities.  We seek a motivated and self-directed individual who has experience in producing communication products for Ethiopian audiences and can develop targeted outreach activities to ensure key target groups can use their own decision-making. The successful candidate will also have good skills in facilitation and stakeholder management.

General:

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

Key Responsibilities:

Support to the office of the DG’s Representative to Ethiopia

  • Manage the development and implement the DG’s Representative’s Office communications plan in consultation with relevant stakeholders;
  • Develop/design and manage the communication materials and tools for the office of the DG’s Representative to Ethiopia including writing blogs, fact sheets, brochures, and stories, preparing presentations and coordinating all communication activities;
  • Promote global activities that increase visibility in global engagements, including on social media related to furthering ILRI’s and One CGIAR objectives;

CGIAR Communications

  • Develop a communications strategy and plan for CGIAR communications in Ethiopia;
  • Contribute to stakeholder engagement activities;
  • Coordinate communications support to One CGIAR coordination in Ethiopia including but not limited to:
    • Produce materials on one CGIAR in Ethiopia;
    • Contribute to the CGIAR research outreach and visibility with local media and stakeholders through various media (eletter, social media, traditional media, etc.);
    • Facilitate communications and knowledge sharing across the campus including coffee mornings, campus seminars, share fairs, campus calendars, campus wiki content updating, campus flyers, and related information materials;
  • Generate a weekly ‘week ahead’ announcement reporting on ILRI Ethiopia campus developments;
  • Contribute to the development of communication strategy and stakeholder engagement;
  • Provide support and/or participate in major ILRI events;

ILRI Communications and Knowledge Management 

  • Manage digital signage, news app and other internal mechanisms as part of ILRI knowledge sharing group;
  • Participate in and support workshops and events, documenting and communicating outcomes as well as facilitation where requested;
  • Produce multi-media materials such as online content, blogs, briefs, other print publications;
  • Write, edit and produce communication and knowledge sharing products for different audiences, following ILRI guidelines;
  • contribute to the communication strategy development, facilitation and production of materials for the Ethiopia based projects;
  • Contribute to the ILRI-wide communications and KM community of practice, participate in CKM learning, reviewing and planning activities and ensure that these activities follow ILRI standards and agreed channels;
  • Perform any other related duties as may be required.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in communication, development communication, journalism, languages or relevant field

Experience:

  • 7 years relevant experience
  • Relevant professional certification

Skills:

  • Excellent writing skills working with different types of multimedia
  • Familiarity with and using social media (twitter, facebook, instagram, tik-tok and producing multimedia products (video, podcasts, radio programs)
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and management
  • Experience in facilitating workshops, conducting training preferable
  • A good track record in developing communication materials/products

Duty Station:  Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Grade:  HG 15

Minimum Base Salary:   Birr 54,044 per month (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)
