Summary

We’re recruiting for the new role of Investment Associate without our Advisory team, which will focus on supporting the Ethiopia Investment Holdings (EIH).

To date, TBI has been supporting EIH in the establishment phase by providing advisory support. In this role you’ll broaden this work with the EIH to define its investment policy, to strengthen its governance and management structures to conduct regular policy reviews. The position will also require collaboration with institutions such as state-owned enterprises and government institutions.

This is a full-time 12-month fixed term contract. The role starts immediately on the identification of a suitable candidate, who will deliver the outputs while based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Job Introduction

The Government of Ethiopia (GOE) has recently put in place its 10 Year Development Plan (2020/21 to 2029/30). This will require a significant capital investment and makes it imperative that GOE improves the management of government assets to maximize earnings and attract investment from diverse sources.

The GOE has embarked on establishment of the Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) to de-risk and diversify investment vehicles to attract private capital. EIH has recently been legally formed through a regulatory vehicle and is commencing operations to effect the acquisition of assets, starting with public enterprises.

EIH intends to learn from international practices and benchmark against countries with proven track records in achieving similar objectives. This will require identification and engagement of strategic partners, robust analysis of global expertise, and adoption of applicable lessons to achieve its mission.

Investment mobilisation is the other core objective of EIH. EIH will mobilise investment to enhance the capability of SOEs to implement their value creation strategy. In addition, EIH will mobilise greenfield investment in prioritised industries in line with Ethiopia’s economic development agenda. EIH will offer international investors a flexible and credible investment structure including sub-funds.

EIH’s investments will be guided by a policy which describes the parameters for investing its funds and identifies investment objectives, preferences or tolerance for risk, constraints on the investment portfolio, and how the investment program will be managed and monitored.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the EIH in the development of a comprehensive investment policy
  • Support in the identification of investment opportunities and the screening, design, and pre-feasibility of flagship investment projects
  • Support in the variety of input required for new investment assessment
  • Conduct analysis to support the negotiation phase of any investment process including in-depth assessment across various areas e.g. market analysis, technical analysis etc.
  • Support in the due diligence for any legal assessments required as part of the investment process
  • Support overall investment promotion activities including supporting in engagement with investors, planning targeted events, preparation of investor pitch materials etc.

Person Specification

  • Experience in investment promotion and attraction, business development, corporate finance, venture capital, private equity (experience in other countries desirable)
  • Experience in analysing, preparing, presenting, and reviewing market assessments, strategic documents, business plans, etc.
  • Ability to work independently, think strategically and translate strategies to concrete and implementable plans with an attention to detail be able to deliver results in complex and challenging environments
  • Ability to manage projects, set realistic priorities, and plan for the successful implementation of activities
  • Public and private sector development experience will be desirable
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Planning and organisation skills
  • Creative and analytical
  • Problem solving and results orientation skills
  • Can work effectively both within teams as well as alone
  • Educational background in the field of economics, corporate finance, accounting, management, business development and other related fields
  • Fluent in English & Amharic (additional Ethiopian languages desirable)
  • Computer literacy: Proficient in use of key Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power point)
