Project Description

Abt Associates, a major American business and government research, technical assistance, and consulting company, manages the USAID-funded VectorLink Project. The VectorLink Project will support the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and USAID to plan and implement an integrated vector control approach with the overall goal of reducing the burden of malaria. Abt has implemented indoor residual spraying (IRS) and entomological surveillance for PMI since 2011, delivering high-quality IRS programs and gathering the most comprehensive vector control entomological data in the world. Under PMI VectorLink project, the scope of the project has expanded and included two vector control methods: Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Nets (ITNs) and Larval Source Management (LSM) in addition to Indoor Residual Spraying. PMI VectorLink continues to assist PMI in reducing the burden of malaria through the implementation of vector control and capacity building in 22 African countries where malaria is endemic. Abt will also continue to support PMI in vector control, monitoring and evaluation, as well as environmental compliance.

Job Summary

Abt Associates seeks a Larval Source Management Environmental Compliance Field Assistant to support implementation and evaluation of PMI-funded LSM activities in eight towns in Ethiopia. Under the supervision of the Country Environmental Compliance Officer, she/he will be responsible for Larval Source Management activities detailed below. This position is for a Nine-month contract period with possible extension.

Key Roles And Responsibilities

• Ensure safe working procedure during larval source management
• Ensure appropriate and timely disposal/recycle of solid waste generated during LSM activity
• Lead routine environmental assessments and store preparation and support the routine environmental monitoring.
• Supervise and perform routine inspection of LSM activity implementation, safe storage, use, and disposal of larvicides
• Participate in the training of community vector control technicians
• Provide technical assistance to LSM implementation teams and counterparts
• Ensure the timely preparation of LSM reports
• Demonstrated ability to work with a minimum of direction and supervision
• Performs additional tasks as deemed necessary

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in public health, environmental health, or another relevant field.
• 4-6 years of professional experience in coordination and supervision of IRS operation
• Experience in monitoring and evaluation
• Good communication skills
• Excellent computer and organizational skills

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree + Five years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree + Three years of relevant experience, or PhD
