JOB SUMMARY

As a member of the Senior Management Team of Global Programs, the Director, Program Management is a strategic partner who supports the Senior Vice President of Global Programs and the Global Programs team with planning, implementation, and monitoring the program strategy, standards and guidelines. The Director, Program Management facilitates translation of the Program Strategy into operational plans while guiding monitoring and reporting; partners with various Orbis teams—Country-based program staff, Monitoring, Evaluation Learning and Quality Assurance (MEL-QA), and Global Programs to ensure that all program management tools, guidelines and standards are developed and implemented, incorporate best available evidence; and advances other major initiatives led by the Senior Vice President of Global Programs.

LOCATION

Working remotely. Preference is for the role to be in one of Orbis International’s country offices in Africa namely: Ethiopia, Ghana and Zambia. Or in Kenya, Tanzania, or Uganda.

REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Director, Program Management reports to the Senior Vice President of Global Programs. They supervise senior program managers worldwide. They also liaise with members of the global program teams including – Development, Clinical Services and Training, Monitoring & Evaluation, Faculty Relations, Cybersight, Flying Eye Hospital and Country-based program staff. They are expected to build and maintain relationships with donors, program partners, development organizations and peer eye health organizations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Program Strategy Planning and Execution

  • Facilitate and monitor the execution of the new global program strategic plan by working collaboratively with the Global Programs team and country program staff
  • Facilitate reporting and managing performance and impact metrics of the global program strategy to determine success and any necessary adjustments
  • Identify promising eye health program implementation approaches that can be adapted and replicated across country programs, drive adaptation of program management tools with an aim of standardization of program execution and to improve monitoring and reporting
  • In coordination with Global Programs and Clinical Services and Training teams, facilitate the development of relevant eye health program guidelines and Orbis models of care
  • Facilitate and oversee collaborative identification and development of annual and multi-year work plans and projects to advance achievement of the global program and organizational strategies

Program Management

  • Devise and implement monitoring and reporting protocols including quarterly programmatic, revenue generation and financial progress reviews and recommended adjustments.
  • Keep Global Programs team and other Orbis staff informed of successes, challenges and lessons learned in implementation of programs.
  • Develop and deliver standardization of program or project management tools which reflect Orbis’s strategies, approaches and methods, and learning and increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Guide the analysis, synthesis and reporting of project outputs and results in close collaboration with MEL-QA team and ensure incorporation of lessons learned into ongoing activity tasks.
  • Work effectively across the organization to support identification and tracking of funding opportunities that maintain and expand country portfolio, bringing together research and evidence. Facilitate high-quality development and delivery of concept notes, written proposals, and donor reporting to advance Orbis’ reputation and impact.
  • Support SVP with Program Committee board relations including meeting agendas and preparation to enhance Program Committee engagement and focus

Leadership

  • Provide programmatic leadership and set priorities for program management for the global program managers
  • Represent the organization’s interests in public and professional circles through meetings, workshops, conferences and webinars
  • Manage and develop highly capable program management team that support programming in Africa, Asia and the Latin America and Caribbeans region, and align their efforts in concert with program goals
  • Support major Global Program initiatives including joint ventures such as the Gender mainstreaming, Women and Girls Campaign, multi-country project design, execution and monitoring.
  • Promote inclusion of organizational principles on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) into program planning, implementation and monitoring.

REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in Public Health, a clinical area or equivalent in Nutrition, Health Economics, Gender, Youth or a related field or equivalent education and experience required.
  • 10+ years of progressive work experience with demonstrated management success and oversight of grants funded by institutional donors, high net-worth individuals, foundations, the US government or multilateral agencies
  • Minimum of 5 years in a senior management or leadership position
  • Field experience and/or experience establishing and/or managing a field office for an international health program preferred
  • Excellent verbal, written communications, and presentation skills

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent communication skills with oral and written fluency in English
  • French, Spanish and/or other foreign language proficient is desirable
  • Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills; must be comfortable interacting effectively with colleagues at all levels, non-native English speakers, partners, donors, and external consultants
  • Experience building and managing cross functional teams and strong track record working across various disciplines
  • Sound planning, organizational facilitation and coordination skills
  • Knowledge of global health and eye health programming, or research and advocacy preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and inclusion with proven track record of working successfully with a multicultural, multi-language and multi-location constituency
  • Flexibility and ability to work well under pressure in a global team and work environment spanning across multiple time-zones.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS : Up to 25% of international and domestic travel is anticipated
