Job Description


The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East, West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia.

The Position:

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit three Research Officer I positions to support the implemetnation of the project HEAL (One Health for Human, Environment, Animals and Livelihoods) including conducting trainings, providing oversight for participatory rangeland management and rangeland health activities, and linking ILRI researchers and country focal points to Rangeland Health Technicians (RHTs), field staff from VSF-Suisse and CCM, multistakeholder innovation platforms (MSIPs), and community rangeland management institutions at the local level.

General: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Participate in and provide oversight to day-to-day implementation of activities related to participatory rangeland management and restoration conducted by RHTs (Rangeland Health Technicians) in collaboration with MSIPs and local rangeland institutions;
  • Train RHTs, field staff from CCM and VSF-Suisse, MSIPs, and local rangeland institutions in participatory rangeland management (PRM), including supporting the planning and implementation of grazing management and restoration;
  • Contribute to overseeing integrative One Health activities—activities addressing the health of people, livestock and rangelands together—including collection and communication of monitoring information to HEAL, and distribution and dissemination of monitoring information on the ground;
  • Serve as the primary liaison between ILRI research staff in Addis and local VSF-Suisse and CCM staff, MSIPs, and local rangeland institutions;
  • Support and contribute to ILRI research activities being undertaken at the local level;
  • Perform any other related duties as may be required.

Requirements

Academic and professional qualifications:

  • MSc degree in rangeland management, agriculture, environmental health, environmental hygeine, natural resources, or relevant field.

Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years working experience in participatory rangeland management approaches, preferably working with NGOs in pastoral areas of Oromia and/or Somali region(s).
  • Experience in report writing including field reports.
  • Proven experience in conducting trainings in a participatory way for different stakeholders (NGOs, government and communities).

Skills

  • Excellent training and facilitation skills
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Computer literate
  • Local language of working area (Afaan Oromo, Af Soomali, or related dialects)

i. Filtu town, working in Filtu woreda, Somali region, Ethiopia

ii. Moyale town, working in Moyale woreda, Somali region, Ethiopia

iii. Yabello town, working in Miyo and Moyale woredas, Oromia region, Ethiopia

Grade: HG 13

Minimum Monthly Base Salary: Birr 24,599 (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for one year with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa.
