Start of Contract & Duration:  Two Months (2)

 INTRODUCTION

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), an international non-governmental organization (NGO), has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. DRC promotes and supports solutions to the problems faced by refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and migrants. The organization has offices across the region, and has been operational in Ethiopia since 2009.  With funding from bilateral and multilateral donors, DRC is currently implementing a range of activities across Ethiopia and Djibouti, including WASH and shelter provision, child and youth protection, Gender based violence response, awareness-raising of migration risks, protection monitoring of migration routes, and livelihoods support for returning migrants or those at-risk of migration.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The Protection officer will be responsible for activities related to case management. She/he will be responsible for effective implementation and proper documentation of all child protection cases. The Officer will ensure that project activities on case management are in line with CPWG standards (SOPs) and international standards for child protection in emergencies and build capacity of social workers. The protection officer will ensure key child protection principles including best interests of the child, confidentiality, do no harm and child participation, draw on relevant best practices and lessons learned, enable children to attain their rights and are compliant with donor regulations.

The Officer works in close collaboration with CPIMS officer and other project staffs to ensure complete support to the team, and ensure quality and effective implementation of the project activities at Dimma refugee camp. He/She will organize and facilitate capacity building training workshops for community structures, stakeholders, DRC staff on protection and participate on various assessments including stakeholder mapping, baseline and end line assessments.

 RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct identification, assessment, documentation and referral (to relevant services) and follow-up of protection cases.
  • Lead child protection case management activities and ensure that case management is provided in line with CPWG standards.
  • Provide information, advice and facilitate access to social services for vulnerable children.
  • Ensure child protection case management for vulnerable children in Okugo responding to needs and immediate protective actions.
  • Assesses the needs for facilitate and monitor alternative care arrangement and support conduct family tracing and reunification.
  • Coordinating service requirements and advocating on behalf of the child to ensure the recipient of appropriate and timely services.
  • Properly document all protection cases that went through the case management process
  • Map and coordinate with service providers to support case management activities
  • Develop referral path way to ensure access to holistic and quality services
  • Conduct assessment to identify the safety and protection of needs of the child, develop care plan, implement the care plan and conduct follow ups.
  • Conduct capacity building training for case management workers and other community structures.
  • Monitor and report on violence, exploitation and abuse of children.

Job Requirements

Experience and Technical Competencies: (include years of experience)

  • BA degree in Psychology, Sociology, social work, social sciences or other related fields
  • Previous 3 years of experience working with vulnerable children and adolescents preferable in refugee settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with empathy and respect
  • Good communication skills and ability to conduct training on child protection and related issues.
  • Demonstrated understanding of gender, protection, and human rights

Education (include certificates, licenses etc.):

  • Minimum university degree in Psychology, sociology, social work and related fields.
  • Preferred: previous experience on case management.

Languages: (indicate fluency level)

  • Excellent verbal and written proficiency in Amharic and English;
  • Proficiency in local languages, such as Anuak or Murle will be an advantage
