About EDUKANS

EDUKANS is an international humanitarian and development agency with headquarters in the Amersfoort, Netherlands, and country offices in Ethiopia, Malawi, Kenya, and Uganda which committed capacitating & supporting local partners and line government structures to provide marginalized children and young people with quality basic education and vocational skills trainings with innovative tools. EDUKANS focus on four key themes: quality basic education, vocational skills training, education in emergencies and equal opportunities for boys and girls (gender).

EDUKANS has been designing and implementing life changing and inspiring multi-sectoral development and humanitarian programmes in Ethiopia since 2016 across three regions (Afar, Amhara, and Oromia).

Purpose of the Role

Under the guidance of Country Director, and direct supervision of the Education Program Manager, the Gender Equality in Education Specialist works on gender policies and trends and relevant linkages to Edukans programmes. The Gender equality in education Specialist provides analysis for formulation of strategies and briefings to program leads, as well as supports Edukans Field staffs for the proper gender sensitivity in the implementation of projects. The Gender Specialist advocates and represents Edukans in his/her area of expertise as requested by his/her supervisor.

As gender equality is fully incorporated in Edukans’s core value and services, the Gender equality in Education Specialist will play a strong advocacy role, internally and externally, for promotion of gender equality, empowerment of women and girls, conformity to key international conventions such as Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals with a gender perspective. S/he will support Edukans Ethiopia to ensure gender equality in its programmatic overall planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures gender mainstreaming into programme/projects and operations, focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Conduct regular mapping exercise to identify level of gender mainstreaming in Edukans programs and operations and suggest recommendations.
  • Hold meetings and discussions with programs & admin staffs at coordination and field offices to conduct deep analysis and identify entry points on integration of gender mainstreaming across the programme/project interventions.
  • Following the results of the analysis and surveys, hold focus (portfolio) group discussions with the programme and project managers, bilateral meetings with staff to support them to mainstream the gender indicators and activities into their projects/detailed implementation Plans.
  • Guide the project teams during the implementation of the concrete project initiatives, as appropriate.
  • Support the implementation of activities Bete project, a UNICEF funded gender program for IDPs and Host Communities in Afar.
  • Develop and review communication and advocacy materials, including a review for gender inclusion and use of the gender-sensitive language.
  • Review knowledge products, Project Documents, and existing M&E Frameworks to ensure integration of gender issues and that gender equality results are assessed against the priorities of the national Gender Equality Strategy.

Facilitates knowledge building, focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Facilitates knowledge building and mainstreaming of gender in related perspectives within Edukans programmes and actively participates in corporate Edukans knowledge creation.
  • Provision of policy options and high-quality advisory inputs to Edukans programmes and projects to ensure these are responsive to national policies, priorities and strategic plans, and advance Edukans’ corporate goals.
  • Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice through identification of best practices and lessons learned.
  • Conduct training for the CO and field staff on Gender equality and related matters.
  • Conduct training for project beneficiaries as requested by the project teams.
  • Take initiative in advocacy efforts by promoting corporate actions at country level, engaging with relevant counterparts.
  • Support the project personnel in implementation of concrete gender-related activities and communications of their results,

Contributes to strategic partnerships and supports with resource mobilization:

  • Define key gender partners and stakeholders to increase the network, cooperation and explore possible joint fundraising.
  • Liaise with the Ministries, National and International institutions within the area of expertise.
  • Have consultations with key national and regional stakeholders MoWCYA, Regional BoWCYA as well as UN agencies, such as UN Women, UNFPA and UNICEF and key national women’s organizations.
  • Lead monitoring and contribute to implementation of various projects, such as but not limited to Unicef Funded Bete project
  • Review possible funding opportunities and support in formulating the proposals.

Workplace/ Location: Addis Ababa, Country Office, period travel to project areas.

Employment Period/Duration: 12 months with possibility of extension 

Job Requirements

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Gender Studies, Development Studies, or a related field of studies.

 Experiences:

  • At least 5 years of working experience in/with development programmes/projects (related to gender), and/or experience in organizing and conducting trainings in international NGOs.
  • Knowledge of the national gender equality policies.
  • Strong analytical, presentation and reporting skills.
  • Strong communications and advocacy skills.
  • Fluent speaker and writer of English
  • Specialized training/certifications in the related area is an advantage.

Functional Competencies:  

  • Strong background in development research methodologies with a specific focus on the areas of gender.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of facilitating and planning workshops and training of gender related issues.
  • Be engaging, innovative and active during presentations.
  • Demonstrated analytical and writing skills.
  • Excellent interviewing and oral skills.
  • Reliability and timeliness in keeping deadlines and delivering high quality products.
  • A good team player, with confidence to work with minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrated advocacy and communications skills.
  • Openness to change and ability to manage complexity.
