Project Overview

Improving Socio-economic Status of young people to Tackle Irregular Migration project is a three-year project (February 2021- January 2023) that works towards addressing root causes of irregular migration. With financial support from Italy Interior Minister, Transforming Socio-economic problems to tackle irregular migration’ project will provide trainings and creates job opportunities for unemployed young people. Lack of job opportunities and poverty are common factors that contribute to migration in Ethiopia.

Young people migrate with the belief that opportunities in other countries will be better than their home. Many young men and women fall victim to various challenges associated with irregular migration. The project will support targeted beneficiaries to change their mind set and create their own businesses around WASH facilities and live in their own country.

There is often inconsistency between the skills taught to young people and the needs of the various sectors.  There is now the need, not only to create new jobs, but also to improve the quality of these jobs and the development of human capital. The project will develop the potential of young people by creating a model based on the concept of equal gender opportunities, improving the level of preparation for employment, ensuring training on the modern skills, preparing for an entrepreneurial mentality and building more effective links between educational and training institutions and the labour market.
