Project Manager – Renewable Energy  – 1 (one) (100%)

CARITAS Switzerland (CACH) has been working in Ethiopia for more than 45 years. Currently CACH cooperates with different partners in Ethiopia. CACH has successfully been registered as an International Foreign Charity Organization in Ethiopia and has therefore become operational at project implementation level. CACH’s main working fields are the field of Economic Development, agricultural development, and food security, WASH as well as supporting and implementing emergency and relief operations. Our current working areas are in southern and Eastern Oromia Region and Tigray. CACH supports and implements currently different projects in these regions.

Summary of Duties

The Project Manager (PM) is reporting to the Country Director, CACH CO at Addis Ababa. The person selected will be the reference and the representative of the Project in the field, monitor and supervise the respective activities at the same time as they go about its implementation in order to guarantee that the objectives are met in line with the policies and strategies of CACH. The PM will also be a point of contact for project coordination with implementing partners at field and national level. At the same time, the PM constantly monitors the context of the project area in order to propose adaptations in the project, propose new interventions in the area of renewable energy, and react to emergencies. The PM must be ready to undertake frequent field trips to project sites.

Main Areas of Responsibility

  • The PM Renewable Energy has responsibility for the overall management of CACH’s component of the project renewable energy, which includes:
  • Strategic Leadership: develop the Energy Sector Strategy of CACH Ethiopia aligned to corporate frameworks; oversee the design of renewable energy / energy storage technology related projects;
  • Programme Management: deliver effective development results, planning and monitoring, financial management, and donor reporting;
  • Business Development: develop proposals and secure funding for innovative energy programmes and develop project-based businesses models relating to the use of renewable energy/ energy storage solutions;
  • External profiling: Present and represent CACH Ethiopia Energy Sector Strategy and activities at workshops, liaise with potential technical partners, NGOs and donors at network events and oversee (social) media publications, organize events;
  • People management: lead and coach the team of its project staffs and consultants as well as operational planning for partner consultants and experts, monitor and coach staff to increase performance and support the development of local capacity builders;
  • Advisory services: lead the implementation of complex assignments according to agreements with donors and new project/programme partners; set benchmarks for results and monitor quality of advisory services of the Energy Sector team;
  • Communication and representation: guide knowledge development and develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders and actively participate in external and internal networks. Proactively identifying and maintaining relationships to sector specific networks and fora;
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: ensure uniform understanding and practice in planning, reporting, monitoring and evaluation of energy programmes in line with CACHs internal frameworks;
  • Plan, design and co-carry out site inspections and energy supply/storage related surveys and support in design and select equipment.
  •  Develop technical expertise in all matters related with energy supply and storage

What we offer 

  • Duty stations will be either Bale zone, Robe or Borena zone Yabello. The candidate must be ready to undertake frequent field trips to project site and partner organizations.

Job Requirements

About you

The ideal candidate represents the majority of the below mentioned areas;

  • Master/ Bachelor’s degree in engineering or another sector relevant subject. Relevant subjects include: electrical, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, environmental science and management, renewable or sustainable energy, climate science and business development (coupled with practical experience in the (renewable) energy sector).
  • Ideally you bring experience in project management – (renewable) energy sector;
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience in renewable energy project management out of which 2 years in a managerial position with responsibility for the project implementation and resource management;
  • Proven experience in planning, designing and co-facilitating high level events (national, international levels);
  • Ability to represent the organization in negotiation, coordination and leading a process that involves various actors at a local level and to act as a part of a multi-cultural and multidisciplinary team;
  • Experience in implementing community-based projects; ability to liaise activities with various actors, with different interest and in different places;
  • Full command of the local working language and good oral and written English skills are mandatory;
  • Experience in project cycle management (annual action plan and definition of the strategy, activities, proposal writing, logical framework, work plan, implementation, reporting, monitoring and evaluation, etc.);
  • Assessment, analytical and planning skills;
  • Diplomacy, tact and negotiating skills.
