Job Description


BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee, one of the world’s largest humanitarian international NGOs, provides relief, rehabilitation and development support to vulnerable people and communities over 30 countries. We began work in Ethiopia in 2000 in response to severe drought in Ethiopia’s Somali region and are currently providing assistance to Ethiopians and refuguees in six regions in Ethiopia, implementing emergency and development programs in health, water and sanitation, economic recovery and development (ERD), women’s protection and empowerment, education, child protection, and multi-sectoral emergency response.

Scope:

The truck driver will closely work with camp-based Supply Chain  staff and/or Camp Manager with the responsibility for proper handling of the truck assigned to him/her and will provide transport of water to refugees and/or Internally Displaced People in accordance with IRC vehicle operation policy and procedures for the below summary statement of responsibilities:

Responsibility 1: Proper driving:

  • The driver is expected to drive 80kms/hour on asphalt road and 60kms/hour on non-asphalt roads
  • The driver is expected to drive in complete compliance  with traffic laws and regulations
  • The driver is expected to drive in a normal mood and mind, not under influence of any type of drug or liquor
  • The driver is expected to have with him a valid driving license always
  • The driver is expected to use a safety belt while driving
  • The driver is expected not to use mobile phones while driving

Responsibility 2: Safety equipment and tools

  • The driver is expected to ensure the presence of safety equipment and tools in the vehicle

Responsibility 3: Vehicle Maintenance

  • Makes timely request for the truck service based on its manual.
  • Makes timely request for minor maintenances, as necessary.
  • Makes follow-up on maintenances at the garage/s.
  • Returns all old parts that are replaced during maintenances

Responsibility 4: keeping of vehicle tidiness.

  • Ensures internal and external tidiness of the vehicle assigned.
  • Ensures that seat covers are clean and properly fixed

Responsibility 5: Documentation and record-keeping

  • The driver is expected to properly complete log sheets
  • The driver is expected to complete vehicle operation report formats
  • The driver is expected to complete Spare parts request form
  • The driver is expected to immediately complete and submit an incident report and police report in case  of an accident

Responsibility 6: General Procedure maintenance

  • The driver is expected not to give rides to a non-staff people without prior approval of authorized IRC staff.
  • The driver ensures no drug (chat) is chewed in IRC vehicle that is assigned to him.

Responsibility 7: Vehicle utilization

  • The driver ensures that the vehicle assigned to him is used for IRC activities only
  • The driver is responsible to ensure that there is a prior approval for using IRC vehicle assigned to him for non-IRC activities.

Job Requirements

  • 5 years relevant work experience for High school Graduate and certificate/TVET accompanied by Auto mechanics certificates.
  • 2 years of experience for Diploma Holder in Auto mechanics
  • Grade 5(five) valid license is a must and other mechanical trainings are considered as an asset.
  • Able to write and speak in English, and local languages.
  • Good knowledge on safe driving ability and strictly adhering to IRC’s driving and vehicle management as well as government regulations.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • NGO experience is plus.
  • Excellent mechanicals know-how and skills of trucks.
  • Physical capability to perform the job.
  •  Ability to work under pressure in camps including during weekends and holidays.
